Informational Guide for People

with Developmental Disabilities

Definitions
Intellectual Disability is characterized by having an IQ of approximately 70
or below.
Cerebral Palsy is characterized by paralysis, spasticity, or abnormal control
of movement or posture, such as poor coordination or lack of balance.
People with Sensory Processing Disorder have trouble handling and
processing sensory information in their environment, and such deficits lead
to wider developmental and learning problems.
A communication disorder is an impairment in the ability to receive, send,
process, and comprehend verbal or nonverbal concepts such as stuttering.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common
childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood.
Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention,
difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity)

Facts
Each year 8,000 infants and nearly 1,500 preschool age
children are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
One in 800 - 1,000 or approximately 4,000 children are
born in the U.S. each year with Down syndrome.
One in every 20 children experience symptoms of
Sensory Processing Disorder that interfere with the
ability to participate in everyday life.
Communication disorders affect one in 10 people in the
U.S.
One in 5 people in the U.S. has a learning disability.
Boys are three times more likely than girls to have
