ENDOCRINE REGULATION

OF RESPIRATION
EXERCISE 5

INTRODUCTION
Main function is to help in regulating
the function of the organ systems
with the help of the nervous system.
The endocrine system is composed
of glands which releases the
hormones for the different regulatory
processes.

INTRODUCTION
OBJECTIVES
Is to study the effect of insulin on
respiration rate of fingerlings.

METHODOLOGY
For each group 12 fingerlings were
obtained. The weight of the fingerling
must not be far from each othe

METHODOLOGY
A. NORMAL RESPIRATION RATE
Three set-ups were prepared with
varying temperature. 18, 28 and 38C.
After the desired temperature was
reached the fingerlings was added and
the mobility and gill movements of the
animal was noted for 5 minutes. The
observation continued until the 15th
minute

METHODOLOGY
B. INSULIN AND RESPIRATION RATE
Three set-ups were prepared with
varying temperature. 18, 28 and 38C.
After the fingerlings were placed in the
bottle five drops of insulin was added
to the solution.

METHODOLOGY
CO2 uptake was measured using NaOH.
The amount of NaOH used until the
solution turned pink was recorded.

GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. What are the factors affecting
respiration rate of aquatic animals?
Temperature of water and solubility of
oxygen. Both of which are directly
proportional (www.marietta.edu)

GUIDE QUESTIONS
2. What is the role of insulin in fishes?
Insulin level correlate with fish mass
thus it suggests that this hormone
have an important role on fish growth
and
development.
However,
the
mechanism behind the regulation of
insulin of plasma glucose levels is still
unclear (Polakof et al., 2010)

GUIDE QUESTIONS
3. What is hyperinsulinism? What is its effect in
carbohydrate metabolism?
Excessive insulin secretion by the pancreas which
results to a high insulin level in the plasma. This can
also be induced by overdosage of insulin by dependent
patients.
This would hasten carbohydrate metabolism and would
cause a rapid drop in the glucose level in the blood
resulting to brain starvation (Insulin shock). Critical to
human health.
(Bowen, 2009; Farlex, 2015)

GUIDE QUESTIONS
4. Is there a difference in the respiration rate of
fingerlings exposed to insulin? What do you think
will happen if glucagon is used instead of insulin?
There was a decrease in respiration rate.
However, the date is inconclusive because there
is a very small sample size.
Glucagon is the negative effector of Insulin thus
it is expected that glucagon will cause an
increase in respiration rate.
