Moisture Content
Chips made of fresh wood normally have moisture
content of 40 60 % based on wet weight. The
decrease in moisture of the pile is generally about 10%
after three months storage.
In piles stored the chips in the lower part of the pile
centre and in the sides become drier.
A layer of chips 1 2 m thick with a moisture content of
about 65% usually covers the top of the pile. Much of
water in this layer comes from condensation of water
vapour from the lower part of the pile, but precipitation
also increases the moisture content. In the slopes of the
piles the thickness is in the range of 0,5 m 1 m
Chip Discoloration
Chip will be more or less discoloured
during storage owing to biological
activity and chemical reactions in the
pile. Significant discolouration is caused
both by bluestaining fungi, by brownrotting fungi and also by some
thermophilic ascomycetes. Discoloration
is often extensive in the hotter areas of
the pile with low pH. In addition
discoloration may be caused by air
pollution such as ash.
