There are an estimated 1250 species of bamboo belonging to about 99 genera in the
world. F these, about 200 species are found in Southeast Asia and belong to
approximately 20 genera. 102 are found in the Philippines, 99 of which are endemic.

The country would need between 112,906,000 to 132,509,000 culms by 2015 to meet requirements for banana
props, fishpens, banana outriggers, furniture, handicraft, construction and panel boards. Equivalent to 113,000 to
132,5000 hectares assuming an annual harvest of 1,000 culms per ha per year current area inadequate. BAMBOO
