MAINTENANCE

GROUP MEMBER
1.

What is maintenance?
Activities to keep pavement, shoulders,
slopes, drainage facilities and all other
structures and property regularly

Three Catogarized of
Maintenance
1. Routine
2. Periodic
3. Urgent

Routine
small-scale works conducted regularly
activities include roadside clearing and
grass cutting, cleaning of silted ditches
and culverts, patching, and pothole
repair..

Periodic
These operations tend to be large scale, requiring
specialized equipment and skilled personnel.
They cost more than routine maintenance works
and require specific identification and planning
for implementation and often even design
Activities can be classified as preventive,
resurfacing, overlay and pavement reconstruction

URGENT
undertaken for repairs that cannot be forseen but
require immediate attention such as collapsed
culverts or landslides that block a road.

RECONSTRUCTION
Removing the old road and replacing or repairing the foundation
layer
This mean removing the surface layer as if resurfacing the road
and digging out the layer below using excavator
The advantages of reconstruction are can replace the surface,
restores texture and grip, extends road life, restores road
quality and creates it restores the structural layers of the road.
The process involves in reconstruction is excavating the
carriageway to about 500mm depth and replacing the materials
with a new road structure.

THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROCCESS

1.Planning, programming and pre-construction
activities.
2.Site clearance
3.Setting out
4.Earthwork
5.Brick construction
6.Drainage construction
7.Pavement construction
8.Placement of road surfacing
9.Placement of road furniture
10.Landscaping

EARTHWORK
Eventual of the earthwork phases of the construction is
to position the subgrade underline the pavement layer
in the right location and at the correct level and to
provide drainage
Largest task in the road building process and therefore
carefully planning and organization are essential.
Speed and efficiency depend very much upon the
quality and type of earthmoving plant available.

PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION
1. Gravel and Crushed Rock Pavement
-. Source : pits, quarries.
-. Haulage : trucks.
-. Spreading : grader or paver.
-. Compaction : higher compaction standard than subgrade different roller
types used.
-. Accuracy of levels important.

2. Asphalt Pavements
- Manufacture : fixed plants (up to 400 tonnes per hour) or large
mobile plants.
- Haulage : trucks
- Placement : paving machine
- Compaction : rollers smooth vibrating drum and pneumatic-tyred
- Usually final layer thin to achieve good riding surface.

3. Cement Concrete Pavements

- Manufacture : ready- mixed batching plant
- Haulage : agitator truck
- Large quantities : site manufacture + normal trucks
- Placement : slip-form paver
- Compaction : internal vibrators + external screeds
