Trailing Cable Couplers

Typical Mining Applications

Quick-connect trailing cable connectors provide safe and convenient power
distribution solutions for all mine needs

UEE Quick-Connect Coupler System

Unit Electrical Engineering Ltd. manufactures a
complete family of quick-connect fittings for trailing
cable systems covering the full range from low to
high-Voltage systems.
The design of each product line is backed by
extensive mining field experience, laboratory testing,
and customer feedback.
All UEE quick-connect fittings are proven to
increase safety, reliability, and convenience while
reducing inventory costs and equipment downtime in
extreme conditions found in mining and other
industrial settings.

Safety
Designed with safety in mind, UEE quick-connect
fittings meet the very strict requirements of CSA
standard CAN/CSA-M421, all UEE couplers have:

a mechanical fastening arrangement to join the

connector to its cable with a tensile strength
greater than that of the cable
strain relief devices suitable for the intended
portable cable
a means to seal out moisture
a means to mechanically lock the coupler
a conductor arrangement whose ground
conductors make before and break after the phase
conductors and ground-check circuit that makes
after and breaks before the phase conductors
provisions for ground-fault protection and groundconductor monitoring at the supply source.

Conductor Arrangement
Since the ground contacts make first and break last,
there is always a path to ground to clear fault
currents.
Since the ground-check contacts make last and
break first, the ground-check monitoring system
disconnects power at the first indication that a quickconnector fitting is being removed.
When used with a ground-check monitoring system,
the phase conductors are never energized when the
quick-connect fittings are disconnected.

Inter-Phase Ground Shield

To increase the safety and reliability of our mediumto high-voltage couplers (8 kV to 25 kV), UEE has
incorporated a complete phase isolating ground
shield system to eliminate phase-to-phase faults.
With the inter-phase ground shield, any fault current
passes directly to ground, greatly reducing
catastrophic phase-to-phase failures.

Fault current limited to size of system neutral

Standard 8 kV product utilizes cast aluminum
ground shield
Special 8 kV, 15 kV, and 25 kV products rely on a
high-tech conductive skin on individual phase
insulators for the ground shield
Not used on 1.1 kV product

Conducting Parts
All major electrical conductors are manufactured out
of 99.9% pure copper or high-quality copper alloy
(brass).

Pure copper for exceptional electrical and thermal

traits.
High-quality brass used for parts that require
greater mechanical resilience, such as sockets
and collets.
Conductors are electroplated with a silver coating
to maximize conductivity and minimize friction
between conductors.

Stepped Design
Male, pin-type conductors have stepped profiles to
ease insertion into female, socket-type conductors.
Non-collet conductors (standard 8 kV product line)
utilize brass set-screws to eliminate non-ideal
thermal effects and they also have fine-pitch threads
to limit loosening.

Collet System
Select UEE couplers utilize our patented collet
phase wire securing system that eliminates setscrews altogether.

No set-screws that can loosen.

No messy solder.
Uniform contact force for simple, reliable, low
resistance connection.

Bodies and Fittings

UEE coupler bodies and fittings are manufactured
out of high-quality aluminum alloy.

Cast in our own non-ferrous foundry.

Machined to exacting tolerances for perfect fit.
Light and durable: no unnecessary bulk or weight.
Entrance fitting matched
to customer cable.
Stainless-steel and brass
fittings for corrosion resistance
and durability.

Powder-Coat Finish Available

Aluminum parts will not rust, but they can be coated
with a rugged polyester powder-coat finish for
identification purposes. Various colors and color
combinations are available.

Entrance Fittings
UEE entrance fittings provide an entirely waterproof
cable-to-coupler interface that also mechanically
secures the coupler to the cable.

Entrance fittings seals use gaskets and hoseclamps or compression grommets.

Customized for the specific characteristics of the
customers cable.

Eye-Bolt Locking Mechanism

To ensure that all coupler connections meet the
mechanical locking requirement of CAN/ CSAM421, stainless-steel eyebolts and brass nuts
secure parts while in use.

Low-Voltage Cable Coupler System

The UEE low-voltage cable coupler system is ideally
suited to mine/quarry, oil and gas, marine, tunneling,
microtunneling, and other industrial sectors.
In addition to CAN/CSA-M421, UEE low-voltage
couplers are CSA approved (certification program
defined for connectors up to 600 volts).

160, 240, 320 Amperes

1.1 kV A.C.
6P Rated (water-proof /submersible)
Bronze Bodies (160 and 240 Amps)
Second ground-check (pilot) available

1.1 kV Couplers with Brass Bodies

1.1 kV Couplers in Harsh Environments

Medium Voltage Coupler System 8 kV

The UEE medium-voltage cable coupler system is
typically used in open-pit mining applications where
it reliably and conveniently connects mobile
electrical distribution systems and other equipment
up to 8 kV. Designed to CAN/CSA-M421, and tested
to I.E.E.E. Std 386-2006.

High-Voltage Coupler System 15, 25 kV

The UEE high-voltage cable coupler system is
typically used in open-pit mining applications where
it reliably and conveniently connects shovels,
electrical distribution systems and other equipment
up to 25 kV. Designed to CAN/CSA-M421, and
tested to I.E.E.E. Std 386-2006.

440, 600 Amperes

15, 25 kV A.C.
Ground-check (pilot) wire up to 2/0

High Altitude Applications

Reduced air density at high altitude lowers electrical
performance of equipment that relies air separation
for insulation and cooling. At altitudes above 1000
meters the Voltage withstand ratings of air-gap
electrical equipment must be de-rated.

25 kV Coupler for High Altitude

The 25 kV insulation system does not rely on an airgap for its insulation rating or for cooling, so this
product does not have to be de-rated when used in
high-altitude settings.

Unique high-Voltage silicone

insulating system eliminates
air voids
Suitable for high-altitude use
without de-rating

8 kV 400H Coupler for High Altitude

The 8kV 400 amp high-altitude coupler has been
deigned specifically for the reduced air density
conditions of high altitude mining. While this product
relies on an air gap for insulation and thermal
control, it has been designed for higher voltages but
has been de-rated for use at 8 kV for up to 5,200
meters above sea level.

Skid-Mounted Junctions
Medium and high-voltage quick connect systems
can be designed to use skid mounted junction to
connect male terminated cables.

Simplify cable inventory: cables are always male,

equipment always female.
Junction assembly is conveniently off the ground.
