Gas lift
Gas lift is a method of artificial lift that uses an external source
of high-pressure gas for supplementing formation gas to lift the
well fluids.

Gas Lift Principles

Gas injected into the tubing reduces the
density of the fluids in the tubing,
Bubbles have a scrubbing action on the
liquids.
Both factors act to lower the flowing Bottom
Hole Pressure (BHP) at the bottom of the
tubing in order to allow the well to flow under
the existing formation pressure.

Gas Lift Principles

1) It is possible to lift from
200 to 80000 bbls/day.
2) As more fluid is produced
the average reservoir
pressure decreases
requiring increase in
amounts of aeration to
maintain a constant
production level.
3) The gas injection could be
either continuous or
intermittent.

Typical Gas Lift Well Barriers

All above barriers protect the tube side and not the
annulus side.
Standard gas lift valve could not act as an isolation
barrier.

Incidents
Even when the downhole annulus valve is functioning properly
the volume of the gas behind this 2 line is equivalent to several
thousands gas bottles.

Annulus Barriers
Using the SASV and Safe Gas Lift Valves greatly increases safety
and risk of annulus gas leakage to the platform is brought to a
minimum.
However, due to policy and regulations a Downhole Annulus
Safety Valve may still be necessary.
