Engineering is an important and learned
profession. As members of this profession,
engineer are expected to exhibit the highest
standards of honesty and integrity.
Engineering has a direct and vital impact on
the quality of life for all people.
The services provided by engineers require
honesty, impartiality and equity and must be
dedicated to the protection of public health
and safety.
Engineers must perform under a standard of
professional behavior which requires
adherence to the highest principles of ethical
conduct.

ENGINEERING ETHICS
Ethics is the study of morality and the
moral choices that we all have to make
in our lives.
Professional societies like medical and
engineering have long established
guidelines, standards, and rules that
govern the conduct of their members.
These rules are also used by the
members of the board of ethics of the
professional organization to interpret
ethical dilemmas that are submitted by
a complainant.

Engineers design many products like cars,
computers, toys, aircrafts, health care
devices, the list is endless. Engineers design
almost everything.
Engineers also design and supervise the
construction of power plants that supply
power to the different companies. Engineers
also play an important role in the design and
maintenance of nations infrastructures,
including communication and transportation
systems. Some engineers are also involved in
agriculture like growing new crop species
and finding new innovative ways of improving
food safety.

As you can see people rely heavily
on engineers to provide them with
safe and reliable goods and
services.
There is no room for mistakes or
dishonesty in engineering.. Not even
an inch
Mistakes made by engineers could
cost a lot of money to the company
but it could also cost lives if its too
bad.

Think about the following.
An incompetent and unethical surgeon
operating on a pregnant women will
not only kill the woman but also the
child in her womb and thats bad.
And if an unethical engineer in order
to save money designs a poor bridge
or a poor building that doesnt meet
the safety requirements, hundreds of
peoples lives will be at risk..

Unlike engineering some mistakes
in other work places can be
tolerated because they wont be
fatal for example if a waiter brings
you coke instead of the pepsi you
ordered. Yes it is a mistake but it
wasnt so fatal as the mistake
made by the unethical engineer..
The mistake made by this waiter
can be easily corrected..

Mistakes made by engineers are
very fatal sometimes, and could
cost so much and so many deaths..
Therefore you must realize why it is
so important that as future
practicing engineers you are
expected to hold the highest
standards of honesty and integrity
