39/50
ROHC (Robust Header Compression)

 ROHC is :
Core
– Header Compression technique Network
for real-time IP packet (e.g.,
RTP/UDP/IP) in wireless UE
UTRAN

environment e2e IP

– Standardized in IETF (RFC3095), Header Compression

and adopted in 3GPP (PDCP)
1. Transmitter transmits Full Header
– Compression efficiency ~ 90% (60 packet, and Receiver stores the static
field of Full Header in the Context
 1 byte) FH 2. Transmitter transmits Compressed
CH Header packet, and Receiver
retrieves original header by Context
and Compressed Header

40/50
Releases 5
 Functionality frozen March 2002
 Main features:
– HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
 Bit rate up to 10Mbps
– IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)
 IP-based multimedia services
 Handling of multimedia services using SIP signalling
– Wideband AMR (new 16 kHz codec)
– Messaging enhancements (EMS, MMS)
– CAMEL Phase 4 (CAMEL in IMS)
– Intra domain connection of RAN nodes to multiple CN
nodes
 Opens the way to Network Sharing

41/50
What does HSDPA provide?
 Evolution of the 3GPP air interface
 Provides integrated voice on a dedicated channel
(DCH) and high speed data on downlink shared
channel on the same carrier (HS-DSCH)
 Combines Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC)
and Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ)
 To be deployed in both Frequency Division Duplex
(FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes (in
both HCR and LCR)
 Provides data rates of at least 3 Mbit/s and
expected to evolve to data rates in the order of
10Mbit/s in downlink

A growing number of operators regard HSDPA

as a key to expansion of 3G

42/50
HSDPA Features
 Characteristics
– TTI = 2ms (= 1 sub-frame = 3 slots)
– QPSK and 16 QAM modulation
– Incremental redundancy HARQ
