ABSTRACT
Special Forces optimized transport vehicle.
Special operations - optimized lift, mobility and refueling system
Key requirements - rapid deployment, stealth, magnified range and
independence from airstrips.
Developed aircraft is Advanced Vertical Takeoff and Landing
Dropship.
AVD uses VTOL, low observables and light weight materials
In our project we are going to optimize and design AVD.
We use MULTI-DISCIPLINARY OPTIMIZATION technique to
optimize our aircraft.

INTRODUCTION
Dropship is a transport vehicle used to transport troops and equipment
from place to place.
In this project we are going to optimize and design an Advanced
Vertical takeoff and landing Dropship.
The two phases of our project are Optimization and Designing the
Dropship.
Optimization is a methodology of making something fully perfect or
more effective as possible. There must be mathematical procedures
involved.

INTRODUCTION
The mathematical procedures we have used for optimization is MDO
( Multidisciplinary Design Optimization).
Multi-disciplinary

Design

Optimization

is

mathematical

programming methodology for designing some complex engineering

systems to give a proper complete structure to the system.
The mathematical programming method which we have used is
linear programming method.
Designing is a construction of plan into a system or object.
We are going to use Catia V5 software to make the structural design
of our dropship

MISSION REQUIREMENTS
Vertical takeoff and landing
Long range
Maximum payload capacity
Rapid deployment
Higher combat radius
Stealth
Noise reduction

MISSION CONSIDERATION
We are considering 4 aircrafts for the AVD
optimization

Mv-22 osprey
Chinook MH-47 D
Lockheed martin f-35 c
Harrier jump jet AV-8B
The 4 aircrafts differ among themselves by
payload, range, speed etc.
For AVD we must go with synergy of above 4

DRAW BACKS OF DROPSHIPS

The older drop ships are having some of draw backs
like

Bigger size
Small combat radius
Low speed
Large radar signature
Small range
More fuel consumption
High degree of noise

Most of the drawbacks will be reduced in the end of

this project.

OPTIMIZATION
In order to design a dropship with drawbacks being

reduced, the optimization process is carried out.

Many optimization methods are normally used like
Structural optimization
Multi-objective optimization
Probabilistic based design optimization
Multi-disciplinary design optimization etc.,

We use the Multi-disciplinary design optimization

method in this project.

Why MDO ???

Structural Optimization
Older technique
Mass is a typically minimized subject
Optimization is based on size, shape and topology

Multiobjective Optimization
Only a single optimum can be found

Probabilistic based design Optimization

Based on the reliability of the product and the probability of

failure.

Why MDO ???

MDO (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) is a mathematical
programming optimization.
Exploits the synergism of mutual interacting phenomena.
New optimization technique that recovers all the past drawbacks.
A better design can be found by considering the interaction
between different aspects.
Discipline aspects. Thus multiple aspects are considered and
solved.
Linear programming is the easiest to solve.

Linear Programming
Linear programming is a mathematical technique

used for maximizing or minimizing a linear

relation. The parameters are transformed into
linear relations to maximize or minimize.
The important parameters to be considered for the

requirement of AVD are

Range
Speed
Weight

Linear Programming
Maximize Range and Speed
Minimize Weight
An example of linear programming optimization
The parameters that are used to maximize the range of the aircraft
are SFC and Weight of fuel.
Max Range R = R1(X) + R2(Y)

R1 Range of 1st aircraft considered

R2 Range of 2nd aircraft considered

R1= 1627 km
R2= 741 km
Constraints: X>=0 & Y>=0
Therefore R = 1627(X) +741(Y)
Aircraft 1: SFC 1= 0.42
Weight of fuel 1= 5968 kg

Linear Programming
Aircraft 2: SFC 2= 0.65
Weight of the fuel 2= 1915 kg
Designated SFC & Weight of the fuel
SFC d= 0.4
Weight of the fuel d= 4500 kg
SFC 1(X) + SFC 2(Y) >= SFC d
W 1(X) + W 2(Y) >= W d
-2
0.42 X + 0.65Y >= 0.4
5968X + 1915Y >= 4500
From Eqn 1 find out X and Y coordinates
put x=0 and then y=0
(x,y) = (0,0.62) & (0.95,0)
\

-1

|||ly for Eqn 2

(x,y) = (0,2.35) & (0.75,0)
Plot out the coordinates in the graph

Linear Programming
The outer three points from the graph are
(0, 2.35) , (0.702, 0.162) , (0.95 , 0)
R = 1627 ( 0) + 741 (2.35) = 1741.35
R = 1627 ( 0.95 ) + 741 (0) = 1545.65
R = 1627 ( 0.702) + 741 ( 0.162) = 1262.19
The optimized range for AVD by using linear
Programming is about 1741.35 kms.
