Planning Speaking Activity

Why is speaking important?

Speaking is a crucial part of second language

learning and teaching.

Today's world requires that the goal of teaching
speaking should improve students' communicative
skills, because, only in that way, learners can
express themselves and learn how to follow the
social and cultural rules appropriate in each
communicative circumstance.

Speaking
Speaking is the most important skill in English language teaching.
In general, to encourage speaking in the early stages of a course and with

students who are a little timid, give plenty of guidance on what the
conversations should be about.
You can give students a list of questions to ask each other or specific topics
and lots of language input first.
So before the activity gets under way make sure that the class knows the
necessary grammar and vocabulary with appropriate examples. In this way
students dont have to think about what to say, only how to say things.
Set speaking tasks for pair group work as often as possible. The tasks
should have clear aims and involve taking turns, so say Find out what
your partner thinks about X and make some notes, rather than just telling
them to discuss X.
The advantage is that the students are more aware of the need to get the
other persons view instead of talking about themselves the whole time.

What is "Teaching Speaking"?

(Nunan, 2003)

To use language as a means of expressing values and

judgements and organize their thoughts in a meaningful
and logical sequence.
To produce the English speech sounds and sound patterns
To use word and sentence stress, and intonation.
To select appropriate words and sentences.
To use the language quickly and confidently with few
unnatural pauses, which is called as fluency.

communicative activities
Communicative activities are practical because they

often dont require any imagination or opinions from

the participants.
They just provide a context for some solid practice of a
particular grammatical structure or some new words.
This type of exercise also accustoms students to
working with each other and gets them moving about
a bit. As in most cases the students arent allowed to
see each others information, you can get them to sit or
stand back to back, for example.

Conclusion
Rather than leading students to pure

memorization, providing a rich environment where

meaningful communication takes place is desired.
Learners should be more active in the learning

process by means of interactive activities.
