INTRODUCTION
Electronic Learning:teaching and learning with the aid of
computers (Sendall et al., 2008)

INTRODUCTION(cont.)
Hart (2008) says that, E-learning 1.0 was all about delivering content, primarily in
the form of online courses and produced by experts, i.e. teachers or subject matter
experts. E-learning 2.0 is about creating and sharing information and knowledge
with others using social media tools like blogs, wikis, forum, social bookmarking
and social networks within an educational or training context to support
collaborative approach to learning.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Nigerian Universities are yet to incorporate the electronic learning system as teaching aid.

AIM
To develop a web-based application that provides easy accessibility and
distribution of study materials.

OBJECTIVES
1.To create and implement a user-friendly interface for both students and lecturers.
2.To create login module for both students and lecturers.
3.To create a database for storing all uploaded and downloaded study materials.
4.To develop a module for student-student and student-lecturer collaboration and
communication.

SCOPE
The scope of this project is to provide a platform for uploading and downloading resource
materials by students and lecturers of the department of Mathematical Sciences, Kaduna State
University and also enhance interaction between students and lecturers of the department of
Mathematical Sciences, Kaduna State University.

SIGNIFICANCE
The significance of this project is that it provides a platform for lecturers and students to
communicate, share ideas and have centralized storage of documents and resources for courses,
available to student anytime and anywhere.

LITERATURE REVIEW
EXISTING ELECTRONIC LEARNING SYSTEM
There are many eLearning platforms.
Commercial software, such as WebCT and blackboard,
Open-source software, such as Moodle and Sakai.
All these applications have common features, but some are more flexible and complete (MartinBlas & Serrano-Fernandez, 2009).

LITERATURE REVIEW
Lots of Universities have begun incorporating web 2.0 tools into their teaching and learning
University of Leeds offers blogs and wikis to staff
University of Warwick offers personal blogs to students
University of Brighton offer blogging via Elgg to 36000 users
The University of Leicester, RMIT University, Curtin university and The university of
Queesland have discussion board included among features provided for students in their
school websites.

METHODOLOGY
Modified waterfall model was used in developing the electronic learning system. This model
modifies the Waterfall model by allowing for overlapping phases. For instance, errors made in
the design phase are identified during implementation, while design is still in progress.
Given todays sophisticated software systems, it is not possible to sequentially first define the
entire problem, design the entire solution, build the software and then test the product at the end.

TOOLS USED
Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP)
MySQL
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
XAMPP

LIMITATION
This project will not take into consideration the content and relevance of uploaded or downloaded
study materials.

CONCLUSION
A learning environment where students are involved in content creation that is everyone is a
learner, but also everyone has a potential to be a teacher was created and web 2.0 tool (discussion
board or forum) was used to improve learning by enabling student to interact, collaborate and
exchange knowledge. The Electronic Learning System was designed to complement the
traditional teaching and learning method and will not replace classroom teaching or will electronic
book replace paper book. The right usage of the website should enhance the acquisition of
knowledge and growth of learning.
