The Eden Alternative
Now an international, not-for-profit organization
that began in a single upstate New York nursing home
in 1991.

Part of a social movement to change how we

think about and care for our Elders.

Focuses on improving quality of life for Elders and

their care partners by seeking to eliminate the three
plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, & Boredom.

Has a history of transforming the organizational

culture of hundreds of long-term care
Founders, Dr. Bill and Judy Thomas
organizations, known as Eden-registered homes.
The Eden Alternative
Based on…

The belief that aging is about continued

growth and development, not simply a period
of decline.

The assumption that an Elder is someone

who, by virtue of life experience, is here to
teach us how to live.

10 guiding Principles, grounded in ancient

ideas, that emphasize how Human Habitats can
Founders, Dr. Bill and Judy Thomas

The three plagues can impact every

member of the care partner team.

Meaningful care is that which nurtures the

human spirit as well as the human body, while
celebrating and encouraging each person’s
unique capacity for growth.

“I have worked in the medical field for over 10
years and was able to take care of my father’s
medical and physical needs. However, I didn’t
know I was neglecting him emotionally and
mentally until I took an Eden at Home workshop.
Eden at Home helped me give my father his
independence back.”

“Eden at Home has shed light on my dealings with
