URBAN CONTEXT
In the city, buildings exist in relationship to their street and immediate vicinity. The Urban Context Plan shows a site in
relationship to the surrounding urban area. A good understanding of context, (the urban environment) assists
designers to create buildings that complement the immediate vicinity and capitalise on a sites best assets without
impacting badly on the neighbours and street. The urban environment is created by a series of overlapping natural,
cultural and built factors. An urban context plan shows these key elements drawn together on a scaled plan. The plan
is essential to developing an appropriate design and built response because it shows:
-- Key urban elements of the existing and future proposed context
-- The main opportunities and constraints affecting the site
-- Important factors to be included in the design response that will support the existing and future desired context.

Shopping is considered as a social activity, and the choices made by shopper and
shop to visit or to locate in a particular area together constitute an 'interface of
exchange'.
Khan Market indeed has the highest potential for attracting longer range consumers.
HIG frequents Khan Market, which has relatively higher through movement nearby.
It is apparent that the HIG visit markets for two contrasting reasons. Firstly, due to high
global accessibility, and secondly due to the attraction and status attached to
individual shops located in less accessible areas.
Therefore people staying in the nearby hotels , high end residences turn up for shopping and
leisure activities .
Areas like rabindra nagar, NDMC housing are comparatively low income area hence they visit
the market in less numbers.
. MIG flows relate to global choice and local Integration; and LIG groups generally follow a
combination of local choice and Integration.
Thus, Khan Market attracts all categories of movement (with an emphasis on HIG)
due to its natural high Choice and Integration measures at all scales.
Khan market displays an even mix of all demographic groups, and an even mix of global and local
attractors.
