NEWSPAPER

A Newspaper is a form of printed media consisting of a number of


sheets of printed papers.
It contains informative articles on news, education, events, reviews
and advertisement.

A newspaper is usually printed on


relatively inexpensive, low-grade
paper such as newsprint.
The news organizations that publish
newspapers are themselves often
metonymically called newspapers.
Most newspaper are now published
online as well as in print

The online versions are called online


newspapers or new sites.
Newspapers are typically published daily
or weekly. News magazines are also
weekly, but they have a magazine format.
With the spread of education, the
popularity and importance of newspapers
have increased by leaps and bounds.
Everybody today wants to read a
newspaper.

The important function of newspaper is to bring us


news of the world. News is their chief interest and
charm.
They tell us what is happening not only in our
country but in other countries of the world as well.
Without news papers, we would be like a frog in a
well who knows nothing of the outside world.
Besides this, the newspapers are also an important
means of communication between the government
and the people .It is through the newspapers that
the government places its programmes, its policies,
and its achievements, before the people.

The newspaper should, however, be read with caution,


for its capacity to do harm is great. Most people believe
everything that is reported by the newspaper. As a
result, the newspaper exerts a profound influence on
the minds of reader.
General interest newspapers typically publish news
articles and feature articles on national and
international news as well as local news. The news
includes political events and personalities, business
and finance, crime, severe weather, and natural
disasters; health and medicine, science, and
technology; sports; and entertainment, society, food
and cooking.

The emergence of the new media in the 17
th century has to be seen in close
connection with the spread of printing
press from which the publishing press
derives its name.

Currency: its information is as up to date as its publication
schedule allows.
Universality: it covers a range of topics.

CLASSIFICATION
Formerly newspapers contained only news. But now they
contain not only news but also views on various subjects.
Thus, now, there are various classes of papers. They can be
classified according to the number of times they appear in a
year. Some are printed daily, some twice in a week, some
weekly, some fortnightly, some monthly.

EDUCATIONAL IMPORTANCE OF NEWSPAPER


The importance of newspaper has been
increased greatly by the spread of
education. Education sharpens ones
curiosity about events in distant lands and
also makes one conscious of the necessity
to maintain ones reading habits. In both
respects, the newspaper appeals most,
especially if one finds little time to read
books.

The educational functions of newspaper are


discussed below:
1. Current events study and its analysis- News paper
describes and analysis of national, international and
local importance. It presents socio-political and
economic news with details to develop an insight
into the matter among the readers.
2. Vocational knowledge- Newspapers bring out the job
opportunity, discussion about production and
consumption of wealth notices, adverstiment of
public and private sectors, rate of commodities and

other valuable information.


3. Development of socio-political
consciousness- the educative role of
newspaper is to bring about proper
knowledge and the socio-political
awareness among the people. It ensures
better understanding of people about
their rights and duties as citizens and act
as the public platform to express views
even against the government

ADVANTAGES OF NEWSPAPER
They keep us informed of what is happening in
other parts of the country and the world. They
give us information about the latest inventions,
researches, discoveries, etc. and new ideas.
The traders advertise their goods in the papers.
This help to push up the sale of their goods.
They build the nation and also guide the
government of the country. They generally make
healthy criticisms of the activities of the
government.

DISADVANTAGES Of NEWSPAPER
It may spread communal hatred and foment
rebellion or revolt.
The reader may get deceived by false
advertisement that may appear in a
newspaper.
The people at powerful positions may use
the newspaper to create fabricated stories to
create public opinion in their favor.
Illiterate people are not able to read.

The modern man starts his day by reading
over the news with a cup of tea.

Newspapers are called the mirrors of the


world.
They reflect and report the trends and
happenings from all parts of the world.
They design in a complete picture of our day-today life.

The importance of newspaper can never


be denied. They serve as a link between

Mass media can work as catalytic agents
