Overarching message:
Alexia S4 has been designed to deliver fexibility to our
customers to help them meet the challenges they face in
running their vessels
Other key points to note:
The cylinder lubrication needs are common across all our customer
segments
The benefts have been categorised into 3 main areas:
how the use of Alexia S4 can help deliver operational simplicity
how the use of Alexia S4 can help to reduce costs
how the technology in Alexia S4 assures performance

NOTE: the different elements will have different significance to different customers

Operational Simplicity replaces Alexia 50 and Alexia

LS (1)
Replaces Alexia 50 and Alexia LS

Alexia 50 and Alexia LS are both good products with a strong reputation in the feld
They were developed when we believed that 2 products were needed to meet the
wide range of Sulphur levels in the feld
Externally, the pace of change has been rapid (especially in the last 2 years and the
industry now needs a lubricant that is more responsive over a wider and harsher
operational envelope
Internally, we now have a deep understanding of oil stress and have therefore been
able to design Alexia S4 as an all purpose cylinder oil

Alexia S4 can be used across the widest range of operating conditions,

fuel specifcations, engine and vessel types
Eliminates the need to carry 2 products
No need to switch products when sailing into ECAs
Only 1 product needs to be stored and use of IBC / drums is reduced
Lubrication training needed for crew is reduced
Risk of selecting incorrect product reduced
Demand forecasting and procurement is also simplifed

1/6/16

23

Operational Simplicity replaces Alexia 50 and Alexia

LS (2)
What evidence do we have that Alexia S4 can replace both
Alexia LS and Alexia 50?
Rigorous feld trial program (see next slide)
Currently 9 vessels testing Alexia S4
Includes containers, tankers and bulkers
Fuel with Sulphur levels ranging from 0.02% to 3.75% (tested before the
change in Global Sulphur cap)
Climatic conditions from Antarctica to the Caribbean
All major OEMs (MAN, Wartsila, Mitsubishi)
Engines types old and new; big and small
Engine loads from 15% (Ultra slow steaming) to 95%

No problems have been observed in any of these trials and we

are on route to full OEM endorsement of the product.

1/6/16

24

Operational Simplicity replaces Alexia 50 and Alexia

LS (3)
Overview of ongoing field trials
Currently 9 trials are in progress with 2 more due to start soon
By May 2012,we would have > 20,000 running hours on a single
cylinder oil across a wide range of operating conditions

As at 28th March 2012

25

Operational Simplicity produced in more than 30

33

Cost Reduction an insurance policy against the risk

of failure (1)
The use of Alexia S4 acts as an insurance policy against the
risk of failure
Avoidance of extra costs due to unplanned breakdown and
maintenance
By maintaining better protection, the engine should remain cleaner
and the liner wear be reduced
The lower viscosity (SAE40) of Alexia S4 gives improved oil
spreadability, better surface protection, less internal friction and a
cleaner engine
See next slide for some indicative costs associated with unplanned
downtime ...

34

Cost Reduction an insurance policy against the risk

of failure (2)
For example, a one day down time for VLCC
is estimated to cost:

Lost hire- $15~$20K/day*

Manpower from OEM **-$3K
Total extra cost - $58K~$62K/day
Other costs that may be incurred include port
charges, dry dock, spare parts, crew etc

Indicative daily charter rates for other

vessels types are:
Container -8000TEU -$40K/day
Container -4000TEU -$8K/day
Bulker 40KT - $5K/day

* Based on March 8th charter rates

** Assume full day

MAN service letter SL11-540/PMN

1/6/16

35

Cost reduction 70BN feedrate (1)

The OEMs set feedrates that should be used onboard a vessel
The feedrate is dependant on a number of factors
The design of the lubricator
The engine type / model
Fuel Sulphur level
Cylinder Oil Base Number (BN)

In general, if a lower BN product is used, the algorithms used

would give a higher feedrate requirement
Alexia S4 can be used at a 70BN feedrate even though it has a
BN of 60

1/6/16

36

Cost reduction 70BN Feedrate (2)

Alexia S4 can be used at a 70BN feedrate even though it has a
BN of 60
Our understanding of oil stress has enabled us to develop a
product with a performance profle that is different to other
products in the market
The actual amount (% concentration) of additive in Alexia S4 is almost
identical to that in Alexia 50
The functionality of the product is different in order to deal more
effectively with acid, thermal, humidity and insoluble stress
We have increased the complexity of the formulation, to enable simplicity
of operation for the customer
We are patenting our approach to prevent our competitors from trying the
same thing

1/6/16

37

Cost reduction 70BN Feedrate (3)

All our feld trials have been carried out using the same feedrate as
would be used for a product with a BN of 70
This means that customers using Alexia 50 (with a BN of 70) do not need to adjust
their feedrates because Alexia S4 has a BN of 60
Comparing to other BN60 products on the market that are using the BN60 feedrate
guidelines, savings are captured in table below

Although the Total Talusia Univeral product can also be used as though it has a 70BN

conditions .... our customers and the OEMs are also becoming increasingly aware of
1/6/16
this!

38

Cost reduction Optimising feedrates (1)

Some customers could be missing out on an opportunity to optimise
their lubricant feedrates
Could spend less money on cylinder oil with minimal or no impact on maintenance
costs

Our fundamental understanding of oil stress and confdence in

performance of Alexia S4 means we are confdent to advise and work
with our customers to help them optimise their feedrates
Help customers to move towards the minimum OEM guidelines for feedrate
Each step reduction in feedrate can translate into signifcant savings on cylinder
oil feedrate consumption (see next slide)

Feedrate optimisation program

Savings are not immediate - a feedrate optimisation program typically takes a
minimum of 1-2 years
Commitment of resources from both customer and SMP technical team are
needed
Initially only to be offered to Platinum customers where their current feedrate is
above the minimum OEM guidelines and the engine is in a suitable condition

1/6/16

39

Cost reduction Optimising feedrates (2)

Every 0.1 g/KwHr reduction in cylinder oil feedrate translates into
the following savings:

1/6/16

40

Cost reduction Lower price point than Alexia LS

Alexia S4 has a lower price point than Alexia LS
With the implementation of the US ECA, this generates a cost avoidance for
many customers
Alexia S4 replaces Alexia LS and Alexia 50 which eliminates unnecessary cost
from incorrect product selection and removes the need to carry higher cost
Alexia LS

Enables us to better manage supply costs and security

Enables customers to beneft from the cheapest lifting options
as the product will be available in all ~500 ports (unlike Alexia
