Requirement of Compact Antenna [1]

Compact antennas are needed so that more antennas can be closely packed together without
the risk of mutual and parasitic coupling between them.

For local area networks, there is an emerging interest in making antennas small enough to
ultimately fit on a single chip with the rest of the receiving front-end.

At low frequencies (HFVHF), miniature antennas are in high demand, since the antenna size
often imposes a significant limitation on the overall size of a portable wireless system.

Introduction
Few well-known techniques to reduce the size of the microstrip antenna:
1. Use high dielectric substrate.
2. Application of resistive/reactive loading between patch and ground.
3. Increasing the electrical length by optimizing the shape of a microstrip
antenna so that its overall size is reduced for a given operating frequency.
Based on the fact that the horizontal slot line mainly contributes to the
radiation of microstrip slot antenna, in this paper we discuss about a modified
meander-type slot antenna.

Miniaturization of Antenna: Variation of slot Geometry

By varying the slot geometry of the antenna, the changes of the resonant frequency of this
antenna can miniaturise slot antenna is 56% smaller than conventional Slot Antenna.
The width of longitudinal-directed slot is narrower than that of the horizontal slots. This
method can downsize conventional meander-type antenna without deteriorating the
radiation pattern.
The length and the width of the feed line can be adjusted to achieve a good input match.

slot widths:
W1 =W2 = 1.0 mm.
The meander slot antenna is fabricated on
2 Teflon substrates.
The miniaturized antenna dimensions are:
W1=0.1 to 1 mm, W2= 1 mm, V = H=11
mm

Conclusion
We proposed a meander slot antenna which has non uniform slot line widths.
With same dimension the resonant frequency of the antenna has been decreased from
3.09 GHz to 2.39 GHz.
Conventional meander slot antenna suggests that the resonant frequency of the
meander antennas decreases by increasing meander sections. However. we can
decrease the resonant frequency by reducing the slot width without changing the total
length of the meander sections, thus maintain the overall antenna size.
With this approach, the size of the modified antenna is about 56% smaller than that
of conventional one.
The disadvantage of these antennas would be its low radiation efficiency due to
small area.
Stacking high dielectric substrate on the antenna and/or usage of a high temperature
superconductor surface could be adapted to compensate the low radiation efficiency.
