His name was VLAD
III
He was Prince of
Wallachia between
1456 and 1462
He fought against the
Ottomans
He was a protector of
Christianity in Eastern
Europe.

Vlad the Impaler


Vlad III is revered
as a folk hero in
Romania as well as
other parts of Europe
for his protection of
the Romanians both
north and south of
the Danube.

Life and Family


Vlad was born in
Sighioara, Voivodeship
of Transylvania in 1431.
His father was Vlad II
Dracul or Dragon.
His father was vested
into the Order of the
Dragon-a fellowship of
knights sworn to defend
Christendom.

Where did he live?


He spent his early formative
years in Sighioara.
He moved to Targoviste,
the capital of Wallachia at
that time.
Vlad is believed to have
learned combat skills,
geography, mathematics,
science, languages, and the
classical arts and
philosophy.

The Impaler
In romanian Vlad the
Impaler is called Vlad
Tepes.
Vlad's nickname identifies
his favourite method of
execution.
The Otomans knew him as
Kazkl Bey (Impaler
Lord) after their armies
encountered his "forests"
of impaled victims.

Reigns
He had three reigns
between 1456 and 1462.
His second one was the
bigger and the most
important one.
He helped Pope Pius II
in his new crusade
against the Ottomans

Wars with the Ottomans


He fought against
Ottomans leaders like:
Sultan Mehmed the
Conqueror, Hamza Bey
or Turhanoghlu Omer
Bey.
His allies were
Matthias Corvinus and
Stephen the Great.

Battles
Vlad tried to dominate
the Danube and he
succeded.
His most famous battle
was in Giurgiu where
he set an ambush on a
narrow pass.
The Wallachians had
the Turks surrounded
and defeated.

Legacy
Impalement was Vlad's
preferred method of
torture and execution.
He was reported in popular
pamphlets in Germany and
in in Tsarist Russia.
Romanian and Bulgarian
documents from 1481
onwards portray Vlad as a
hero, a true leader.

Vampire myth
The connection of the
name "Dracula" with
vampirism was made by
Bram Stoker around the
1890s. Since then,
"Count Dracula" has
been a recurring
character in vampire
mythology and media.
