MAKES HER THE PERSON SHE IS TODAY.

Who was
Florence
Nightingal
e?

Florence
Nightingale was
born on May 12
1820 and died on
August 13th 1910,
at the age of 90.

Florence Nightingale was born in

Florence, and just like her sister
she was named after the city she
was born in.

She was born into the family of a

wealthy Sheffield banker, William
Edward Nightingale.

For the first thirty years of her life,

Florence tried to live her life
obediently, quietly and
unadventurous because that was
the behaviour expected of a
woman born into a respectable
family.

What was
her
childhood
like?
Her sister, Parthenope
was also getting an
education but
decided learn house
chores and work like
her mother, scrubbing
floors and doing
house chores all day.

Florence was educated without a

purpose, much less for a career. Her
parents wanted her to get educated
because it would maker her a better
companion.

Instead of learning about home

management, Florence indulged
into the interests of politics

With the privilege of a top notch

education, Florence learnt Latin,
French, German, Italian and Greek.

She had a stronger bond with her

father, and discussed politics,
science and things that happened in
the news

Her life
story:
Part II

Florence nightingale
began her nursing
career by giving food
to the poor on her
fathers estates
She then moved onto
doing simple nursing
tasks, like making sure
they were clean and
comfortable.

She started her nursing education by

volunteering to look after sick
relatives at their abodes

When she was 24, Florence asked

her parents if she could go to
Salisbury Infirmary Charity to study
nursing for three months.

Her parents called her ungrateful,

because nurses at the time were
seen a little above servants.

On a trip to Rome, she met Sidney

Herbert, a young man that
introduced into the medicine and
inspired her to pursue a career in the
medical field.

Her life
story:
part III
Florence was inspired by
a place she visited on a
holiday in Germany; the
Kaiesewer institute. It
was not only a hospital
but an orphanage and
asylum for the mentally
ill.
She returned to
kaiesewer in July 1851
and worked like a slave
for three months. She
started her days at 5
o'clock and ended them
well into the night.

After returning to England, she

went to look after her sibling and
parents. Even though she kept her
family first, she would still
constantly visit hospitals.

In 1853, nightingale was offered a

job at the Institution for the care
of sick gentlewomen in distressed
circumstances. She happily
accepted and for once her father
sided her career decision.

At 34, her family finally accepted

her as an independent adult.

During the march of 1854, the

Crimean war began, and Florence
volunteered her services for the
injured in battle.

The Crimean war:

While the
allies of UK, France was having good treatment, the British military

Florence quickly gathered a group of nurses and then rushed them to the
battle on Inkerman by December 4th 1854 The hospital was filled with
disease and their were no utensils or medical equipment.

She was using her leadership made sure that all the patients- there were
over a thousand- got healed

She herself took some responsibility of doing night rounds, so that the other
nurses could get some rest. It was said that she spent 20 hours on her feet
everyday.

By June 1855, deaths at Scutari had dropped to 2%, thanks to the decent
sanitation that nightingale had requested. She was free to go to other battle
fields and heal other patients in need

After her
peak: Part V
After the war?

After the war, national

admiration was lead by
queen Victoria. She was
gifted a unique brooch and a
personal letter of thanks and
gratefulness.

In 1860, Florence
nightingales nightingale
school of nursing was
established

1861-1865 was the American

civil war, the congress and
the rest of US. Her teachings
and methods were used in

Why Florence nightingale?

I chose Florence nightingale

because she is an inspiration
for those with the ambition
of working in the medical
field.

Her acts of kindness, her

leadership, she is an idol a
role model to me, and I am
ambitious to become as
successful as her but humble
as well.
