FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY

Automatic Fire Detection and Alarm System


Fire alarm system comprising components for automatically detecting a
fire, initiating an alarm of fire and initiating other actions as appropriate.

Automatic Sprinkler System


A system of water pipes fitted with sprinkler heads at suitable intervals and
heights and designed to actuate automatically, control and extinguish a fire
by the discharge of water.

For high rise buildings, the following additional


provisions of means of access to the building shall be
ensured
a)The width of the main street on which the building abuts shall not be less than 12
m and one end of this street shall join another street not less than 12 m in width
b) The road shall not terminate in a dead end except in the case of residential
building, up to a height of 30 m.
c) The compulsory open spaces around the building shall not be used for parking;
and
d) Adequate passageway and clearances required for fire fighting vehicles to enter
the premises shall be provided at the main entrance; the width of such entrance
shall be not less than 4.5 m. If an arch or covered gate is constructed, it shall
have a clear head-room of not less than 5 m.

Emergency and Escape Lighting


Emergency lighting shall be powered from a source independent of that
supplying the normal lighting [see good practice

FIRE PREVENTION
Classification of buildings based on occupancy
-The starred hotels are grouped in Group A Residential buildings (Sub division A-6)
- These shall include the hotels duly approved by the concerned authorities as Five
Star and above Hotels.
-Auditoriums are grouped in Group D Assembly buildings(Sub division D-1)
- Buildings having a theatrical or motion picture or any other stage and fixed seats
for over 1,000 persons.

HOTEL
Terrace tank: capacity-25,000 litres
Pump: capacity-900 litre/min

REQUIREMENTS
For buildings of height greater than 15 m, fire extinguisher, hose reel, yard
hydrant, manually operated sprinkler and automatic alarm system are
required.

AUDITORIUM
Height-19 m
For buildings above 15 m but not exceeding
24 m in height, fire extinguisher, hose reel, automatic sprinkler, manual
sprinkler, automatic alarm system and underground storage tank are
required.
Underground water tank: capacity-1,50,000 litres
Terrace tank:capacity-20,000 litres

Water Supply Requirements for Buildings


A minimum of 70 to 100 litres per head per day may be considered
adequate for domestic needs of urban communities, apart from nondomestic needs as flushing requirements. As a general rule the following
rates per capita per day may be considered minimum for domestic and
non-domestic needs:
For communities with population upto 20000 and without flushing system:
1) water supply through 40 lphd, Min stand post
2) water supply through 70 to 100 lphd house service connection.
For communities with 100 to 150 lphd population 20000 to 100000
together with full flushing system.
For communities with 150 to 200 lphd population above 100000 together
with full flushing system.
Out of the 150 to 200 litres per head per day, 45 litres per head per day
may be taken for flushing requirements and the remaining quantity for
other domestic purposes.

Water Supply for Fire Fighting Purposes


The Authority shall make provision to meet the water supply requirements
for fire fighting in the city/area, depending on the population density and
types of occupancy.
Provision shall be made by the owner of the building for water supply
requirements for fire fighting purposes within the building, depending upon
the height and occupancy of the building, in conformity with the
requirements laid Fire and Life Safety.
The requirements regarding water supply in storage tanks, capacity of fire
pumps, arrangements of wet riser-cum-down comer and wet riser
installations for buildings above 15 m in height, depending upon the
occupancy use, shall be in accordance with
