STRINGS

A Violin is a treble instrument played


under the chin and is bowed or
plucked to make a sound.

A Cello is a string instrument (with


four strings) that is bigger than a
violin and is lower in tone. It is rested
on the floor while played.

A Viola is an alto instrument is the


violin family played under the chin
with four strings.

A Guitar is a string
instrument with six strings

A harp is a string instrument with 46 strings and a series of


foot pedals.

A bass is a string instrument that is the largest and deepesttoned instrument of the violin family having a range of 3
octaves.

SITAR

Woodwinds

A Piccolo is a small flute played an octave higher.

A Clarinet is a single-reeded woodwind


instrument with a cylindrical shaped bore in
the key of B-flat. This is the most common
type of clarinet.

Contrabass Clarinet is a very


low pitched woodwind
instrument similar to the
clarinet differing in tone and
size.

A Flute is a cylindrical woodwind instrument

made of wood or metal that is closed at one


end. It produces medium to high pitched
sounds.

A Bass Clarinet is a woodwind instrument


similar to a clarinet differing in having a larger
size and a lower tone.

An Oboe is a double-reeded woodwind instrument with a


cone shaped bore.

A Bassoon is a low toned, double-reeded


woodwind instrument.

A Saxophone is a single-reeded
woodwind instrument with a cone
shaped bore and a clarinet-type
mouthpiece. The alto saxophone is
the most common.

Brass

A Trumpet is a brass instrument which produces


sound by pressing valves and produces a brilliant,
high pitched sound.

A Mellophone is a variation of the


French Horn constructed for
marching.

A French Horn is a brass instrument


with a funnel shaped mouthpiece and
controlled by valves. It can make low
and high pitched sounds.

A Trombone is a brass instrument of the

trumpet family that produces sounds by a U


shaped slide or a set of valves.

A Baritone is a brass instrument controlled by


valves in B-Flat, similar to a tuba with a
smaller bell.

A Tuba is a large brass instrument that


produces a deep sound and controlled by
pressing valves.

Percussion

A Piano (Pianoforte) is a keyboard instrument consisting of 88


keys on which sound is produced by hammers striking strings
when the keys are pressed.

The Bells are a high pitched, single octave


percussion instrument in the same
configuration as a xylophone.

Cymbals are in the


percussion family.
They are circular brass
plates that come in
various sizes and can
be held in hands and
struck together,
crashed mechanically,
or suspended
individually and hit
with a mallet or stick.

A Snare Drum is a cylindrical drum with two heads and


several gut, steel, or nylon wires (snares) stretched
across the bottom head.
