PERSAUDARAAN (Brotherhood)

INTRODUCTION
Persaudaraan (brotherhood) is a word of deep
meaning to fraternal bonds, as it is the basis of a
great fraternity. It started by engaging with others and
then starts to develop friendships and trusting them.
This value will ensure the betterment of them and
theyre fraternal bonds. It also can be found in family
institution, business, and in everyday life. According
to Oxford Dictionary, persaudaraan means a feeling
of great friendship and understanding between
people. Basically this term is derived from the word of
brother which means a man who has the same
parents as another person and also give meaning of a
man who you feel close to because he is a member of
the same society and group. The real example that
manifests the important of persaudaraan is the labor
union. The labor union exist to take care of labor's
welfare and for other people trust other people to
make sure that they have safety working place and
fare salaries. This research on persaudaraan was
works on to get the variety meaning of this value, its
significance and also to identify how to develop this
value.

METHOD AND MATERIALS:

For this research, we are using interviewing


method to take an opinion from the people who aged
around 60 years old and above. Based on our
research objectives, we prepared some interview
questions that are not related with the sensitive issues
in Malaysia but it is more to take a look what is the
view that they see in term of persaudaraan among
society. We conducted the interview by asking the
question with 10 people, five female respondent
(three of them are Malay and two Indonesian) and five
Malay male.

INTERVIEW QUESTION:

Q1. How do you define Persaudaraan (Brotherhood)?


Q2. How do you show your brotherhood on a daily
basis?
Q3. How can brother/sister show he/she cares for
another brother?
Q4. How Persaudaraan do shape your ethnics attitude
and behaviors?
>What is the significance persaudaraan?
Q5. Are you satisfied with our Persaudaraans value
nowadays? Why? (based on his/her answer)
>How to develop the value of persaudaraan?
Q6. How do you rate Persaudaraans value during your
era compared to now?

Results
5 female which 3 of them were Malay, 2 of them Indonesian and 5 of them were Malay
male. Among 10 sample or respondent, we measure out that, 3 Malay respondents
conclude, persaudaraan mainly has to stand on this two basic things in it. There are:

Principles of persaudaraan. In persaudaraan we need sincerity, honesty and trustworthy


in order to make a perfect full circle of persaudaraan among all. Sincerity and trustworthy
is needed as we have to be sincere with all peoples we meet. Si not talk bad or lie about
others. Same goes to honesty, people cannot lie and do something bad to others for
example cheating. In persaudaraan this three matters or principles have to be included into
one person to have a complete bonding in persaudaraan among brother and sister.
Respect among all individual: According to 3 female respondents, they said respect also
work as a root for a persaudaraan today. As for instance, young generation must show
respect to older and do good manner to them by helping and listen to what they said.
Nowadays, they seem s to be leas respect to older and try to stand by their own way and
ignore elders. They being rude and rough to elders.

Meanwhile, 2 respondents from Indonesia conclude that persaudaraan is all the


same even we are in a different culture or races. They might also said principles
mentioned by other respondent also important. As for them, persaudaraan make people
united as they were from other belief, races, and religion but through persaudaraan they
willing to help each other with sincerity. Whenever people minglel and learn new things
adapting others behavior, culuture from another community, they assure that existed
bonding will last longer and form a strong persaudaraan among this peoples.

The 5 remaining male Malay respondents mentioned that persaudaraan has a


starting point. It comes from a house which means from parents. Education, bonding
creation is all comes from home with a good parenting skills. Kids are a faster learner,
from imitating their role model, parents, they will bring out this character to the people
outside for instance friends at school. Bad imitation will lead to bad attitude and lead to a
negative bond which is persaudaraan among them. Kids as a continuity to become a
leader in the next generation, so lack of knowledge in ukhuwah or persaudaraan may
produce bad leader to people soon.

Conclusions
Wrapping up, although this research was carefully
prepared, we are still aware of its limitations and shortcomings.
First, the number of the participants is little, only 10
participants at the age of 60s and above. A greater depth of
understanding and evaluation can be obtained if the
respondents are more than that. Next, since the main method
in gaining the information is through interview, we found
difficulties in understanding the messages from the older as
they speak in their mother tongue language. Further on, this
research found that people has vary in understanding about
persaudaraans value. Islam encourage persaudaraan among
the believers as it is the main tool for every society to be the
strongest ones in front of the enemy and thus protecting their
either religion, family, and other of their belonging from being
violate. As narrated in Sahih Muslim 2564, the prophet pointed
to his chest three times, then he said:it is sufficient evil for a
person to look down upon his brother Muslim. All of the Muslim
is sacred to another Muslim, his life, his wealth, and his honor.
