Who Are We?

Sabino High School

Class of 2017

Pre Calculus / Trigonometry with Mr. Kukla

Why Were Here

Why Should You Conserve?

What do you think it means to conserve?

Conservation: The act of preserving,

guarding, or protecting.

This also applies to Water and Electricity

Its simple!

Little Things You Can

Do

Recycle: paper, aluminum cans, plastic, etc.

#ChooseTheRightCan

Electricity: Turn off lights, fans, and other little

appliances. In the classroom unplug pencil sharpeners
and turn off computers that are not in use.

Water: Turn off faucets ALL THE WAY, shorter showers

Dont Waste Water instead, Reuse Water

What was Changed at

Sabino

The Sabino
Recycling
Program

Checked to see what

classes had recycling
bins, didnt have bins,
and rooms that had bins
but were in unused
classrooms

Teachers and students

hopped on board

Put up signs around

campus to remind
students and faculty to
recycle

Working on getting all

active classrooms recycle
bins

Anyone can recycle!

Leaky Faucets
Leaky Faucets can occur
when the faucet isnt turned
off all the way or lose pipes
Make sure the knobs,
handles, etc. are turned off all
the way
Report leaky faucets to
teachers or school faintness

Every week checked all

faucets for leaks

Any leaky faucet was met

with a work order and
was surprisingly fixed
within the week

Signs were put up near

faucets to reminded
users to turn them off

A leaky faucet that drips

1 time every 3 seconds
can waste up to 1,296
gallons of water a year

Turning off
Computer
Monitors
Monitors that are asleep will
wake up or turn on if you
touch the keyboard or move
the mouse
Monitors are off if nothing
happens when you touch the
keyboard or move the mouse

Checked all 352

computers in the school 1
time a week

The first week of testing

45 monitors out of the
352 were turned off, while
the rest were sleeping/on

Notes were left on each

computer reminding
students and teachers to
turn off monitors

By the last week of

testing 148 monitors were
off

Building Temperature

Every Friday for 4 months excluding breaks

Rooms stayed between 67-72

By keeping it at a higher temperature uses less

energy

A way to keep air cool and flowing is by opening up

windows while the AC is turned up or even turned off

By keeping the AC at 75 during warmer months and

opening up windows can save schools fortune.

Filtered different types

of trash into different
bins: Recyclable ,
Compostable, and Trash

After a some help and

posters for reminders
the students and
teachers realized which
trash went in which
bins

Found out that over half

of the schools trash
could be composted
and used somewhere
else

Composting
Composting: Organic matter
that has been decomposed and
recycled as a fertilizer and soil
amendment

Decrease amount of waste

and turns it into something
that can be used to help
plants grow

If these appliances
were to be unplugged
they would be
inactive for 17 hours
a day for 180 school
days saving Sabino
$256.39 a year

Unplugging Appliances
Cont.

Each week E-mails, flyers, and reminders

were given to all teachers to get them to
unplug their small appliances.

During the testing period is became apparent

that teachers werent unplugging their
appliances with out the incentive of a reward

At the end of the testing all teachers who

precipitated the most were given candy.
