LIFE
He was Born on 20 February, 1901 on
Saaremmaa Island in Kuressaare.
His family immigrated to the United
States in 1906.
His given name at birth was Itze-Leib
Schmuilowsky but was changed upon
arrival in the US.
On March 17, 1974, he died of a heart
attack in a men's restroom in
Pennsylvania Station in New York City.

EDUCATION
He attended the University of
Pennsylvania and received his
Bachelors degree in architecture at the
age of 24.
After college, he worked as a senior
draftsman in the office of Philadelphia
City Architect John Molitor.

STYLE
Kahns architecture is notable for its
simple, platonic forms and
composition.
Through the use of brick and poured
in place concrete masonry,
Kahn used many different shapes
and lines to create his masterpieces.

THE JONAS SALK INSTITUTE


FOR BIOLOGICAL STUDIES
Location:- La Jolla, California
construction:-1959-1965

It was to be a campus composed


of three main clusters: meeting
and conference areas, living
quarters, and laboratories. Only
the laboratory cluster, consisting
of two parallel blocks enclosing a
water garden, was built.
Made to be a garden of stone
and water.

The exterior of the building is striking in its simplicity, with huge


walls deeply recessed by porticoes and large openings of regular
geometric shapes.
This skillful use of water to portray the riverine beauty of
Bangladesh adds to the aesthetic value of the site

The element of natural light is the main focus of the design, and
creates elegant spaces
Kahn developed a series of barrel vaulted galleries in a series
of structural bays.
At the center of each vault, Kahn used a skylight/ indirect light
fixture to provide a gentle glow in the space.
Moveable walls are used on the inside to display various pieces
of art.

he uses hollow tetrahedral
concrete ceiling and floor

systems.
