DOH! RIO BLAMES IT ON THE SIMPSONS (2002)

THE BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT, FERNANDO HENRIQUE

CARDOSO, "BROUGHT A DISTORTED VISION OF
BRAZILIAN REALITY".
It follows the family from their home in Springfield to
Rio to look for a poor orphan that Lisa is sponsoring.
The cartoon characters found that Rio de Janeiro is a
city where all men are bisexual, where fearsome
monkeys roam the streets, and tourists are
kidnapped by taxi drivers and mugged by children.
Rio has severe social problems and high levels of
violence, although these are generally restricted to
certain areas. Attacks on tourists are rare and no one
has ever been attacked by a monkey on Copacabana.

EFFECT OF NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES

The Simpsons, one of the most popular current comedy
shows in the world, has played on national
stereotypes several times in the past.
Unfortunately, the Rio tourist board did not see the funny
side of the Satire and was preparing to sue the
producers, Fox, for damage to its international image and
loss of revenue.
The tourist board said it could take a joke - but that the
episode went too far and undermined an 18m
(12.5m) advertising campaign to attract visitors to the
city.

Davide Grasso, chief marketing officer at Nike, says the advert
celebrates the teams unique style of play as players who
improvise, dare and modify their technique.
He adds: [Brazils] unique brand of phenomenal football
is an inspiration to Nike and athletes around the world, and we
are celebrating that unique style of play with this new
campaign.
Neymar plays like a kid; Luiz runs over the competition;
Silva dominates the penalty box; Bernard is the fleetfooted midfielder in a land of giants; and Paulinho is the

It opens with the players preparing for kick-off singing

the Brazilian national anthem. Iconic flags.
Luiz is depicted as a giant superhero, running over his
competition in a stunning animation captured by
Brazilian cartoonist Rafael Grampa (intertextuality).
the footage flips from the pitch to Thiago's world, shot in
a gangster-noir style. He is 'The Godfather' of the
penalty box, and steals the ball from his opponent.
Manager Luis Felipe Scolari, famed for his fatherly style
of management, is shown shouting instructions to a
team of four-year-old's, when Luiz transforms from a lost
little boy into an all-action giant ("David vs Goliath"
scene) who clears the ball spectacularly off the goalline.

A POSITION AT THE FOREFRONT OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS OR
IDEAS.
Vanguard is a television documentary series that was broadcast on the now
defunct Current TV television network. Vanguard reported on such issues as
the environment, drugs, and the effects of globalization and conflict.
The focus of most Vanguard episodes is to explore and immerse viewers in
global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven
reporting, the shows correspondents conduct interviews with affected
peoples and the regions involved usually being led by a guide and translator
who facilitates access. Since Vanguard's subject matter often involved
exposs about organized crime, drug trafficking and armed revolts, the
correspondents can face significant danger because of their reporting due to
unstable political or security situations.
Vanguard has received some of the media industrys highest honors for
journalism, including the 69th Annual Peabody Award, given for excellence in
electronic media,[1] and the 2010 Television Academy Honor, which
recognizes "achievements in programming that present issues of concern to
our society in a compelling, emotional and insightful way." [2] Vanguard
has also been awarded the 2009 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and the
2009 Livingston Award, and has been nominated four times for a News and
Documentary Emmy Award and also for a Sports Emmy Award. [3]
