Air Pollution

When it occurs?
AIR POLUTION TAKES PLACE WHEN
GASES OR PARTICLES ACCUMULATES IN
THE AIR IN HIGH CONCENTRATION THAT
CAN HARM LIVING ORGANISMS AND
THE ENVIROMENT.

The sources
(a)motor
vehicles
Fossils fuels that includes petroleum, diesel
,and gas used in motor vehicles produce
carbon dioxide,carbon monoxide ,oxides of
sulphur( including sulphur dioxide), oxides of
nitrogen(including nitrogen dioxide), lead,
soot and dust.

(b)industry
Among the pollutants produced are carbon
monoxide,sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, chorine,
dust,and smoke.
Agricultural chemical such as airbourne,
pesticides , insectides and herbicides are also
sprayed into the air instead of landing on planted
crops.

(c)open air burning

The burning of rubbish ,solid wastes

and forests produce a lot of
smoke(causing haze),carbon dioxide
and dust.

Bronchitis
Emphysema of the lungs
Silicosis and dark lungs
Cancer of the lungs

formation of lead

cracks appear
becomes soft and easily
torn

Effects on plants
Air pollutants damage plants and animals by
oxidising their cellular component and the
enzyme.
Smoke ,soot and dust settling on the surface of
leaves will reduce the rate of photosynthesis of
plants.

FORMATION OF ACID RAIN

.Suiphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide released from factories, electric

power station and motor vehicles subsequently dissolve in
atmospheric water vapour before coming down as acid rain-in the
form of sulphurous acid, sulphuric acid, nitrious acid and acid nitric.
. acid rain falling on plants changes the colour of their from green to
purple and cause the leaves to die.

Effects on the climate

Smoke ,dust and soot(pollutants from motor vehicles, open

burning of rubbish, forest burning and waste gases from factories)
can combine with cloud particles to form haze that darkens the air
and reduces visibility.
The increase in the atmospheric content of carbon dioxide is
caused by the use of fossil fuels. This has caused a global
temperature increase through the greenhouse effect.

A high global atmospheric temperature will melt the ice block of

the polar regions which will raise the sea level and cause flooding
in low lying countries. This will also cause a change in the climate
of the world.

THE SOLUTION
Both the production and the use of fossil fuels should be
reduced by all nation.
The use of cleaner fuels like solar energy, wind energy,
hydrogen fuel cells and hydroelectric energy need to be
further development and expanded.
Unnecessary deforestation for farming and other
development projects need to be controlled and minimized.
More trees need to be replanted in order to absorb and
remove more free carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
As an individual, we can do our part to reduce the air
pollution by walking, cycling or using public transport
instead of using our own motorized vehicles.
