Introduction
The industrial development has led to growth of the factory or
plant size has created huge demand for the material handling
systems.
Any material handling process consist of three activities.
Picking up the load.
Transporting the load.
Setting the load.
Material handling equipment ensures a constant load transfer
between two or several point connected by the common activity.
It is important note that ,the transferring of load is not confined
only to shifting of loads from place to place but also include
loading and unloading.

Principles in selecting material handling

equipment

Direction of load travel.

Length of load travel.
Type and properties of load to be handled.
Required load moving capacity unit.
Characteristics of production process.
Method of stacking loads at initial and final points.
Local conditions.
Initial and operational cost.

Objectives of material handling systems

Accuracy in Transporting loads to Destinations .

Precision in Pick-up of Loads.
Transporting loads in scheduled Time.
Transporting loads of Required Quantity.
Transporting loads without damage.
Automation with minimum manpower.
Low initial and operational cost.
Simplicity and easy maintenance.
Operational safety.

Types of Conveyors

Flat belt Conveyor.

Troughed belt Conveyor.
Blanket belt Conveyor.
Woven wire belt Conveyor.
Chain Conveyor.
Apron Conveyor.
Screw Conveyor.

Chain Conveyor
Chain conveyors consist of
endless chain running over the
drive or head sprocket and tail
sprocket. The drive sprocket is
coupled with drive unit.
The load carrying strand of
chain is supported on the load
carrying tracks, while the
return strand of the chain is
supported on return tracks.
Chain conveyors utilize a
powered continuous chain
arrangement, carrying a series
of single pendants.

Advantages of Chain Conveyors

The chain conveyors display low stretchablity
under load.
The chain conveyors can take impact load which
are unsuitable to belt conveyor.
The chain conveyors can transport large loads.
The chain conveyors can be used at elevated
temperatures.
There is no possibility of slip in chain conveyors.

Limitations of Chain Conveyor

Operation of chain conveyors require careful
attention and regular lubrication.
At high operation speed , chain wear is
significant. Hence chain conveyors are run at a
maximum speed of 0.6 to 1.0 m/s.

Applications of Chain Conveyors

Mining .
Food processing.
Sewage treatment.
Timber harvesting.
Agriculture.
Textile machinery.
Car plants.

Screw Conveyor
The screw conveyors consist of
screw or worm, in the form of
helix, rotating in trough or
tube. The material is moved
along axis due to action of
screw.
The fully-bladed screws are
used for maximum conveying
capacity.
The screw conveyors can
handle hot as well as wet
materials. They can transport
the material from fine powder
to animal feed , coal to slurries

Advantages of Screw Conveyor

Screw conveyors can have multiple inlet and
discharge points.
When a screw conveyor is used as a metering
device, it is considered a screw feeder.
Screw feeders are used to initiate a material
process by metering product from a bin or
hopper.
Screw conveyors can provide an air lock between
upstream and downstream equipment.

Disadvantages of Screw Conveyor

When the angle of inclination increases, the
allowable capacity of a given unit rapidly
decreases.

Applications of Chain Conveyors.

In Agriculture.
Snow blowers.
Combine harvester.
Injection molding machine.
Ice resurfacer.
