The IMPACT OF URBAN

GROWTH

&
SPRAWL FOR URBAN
AREA

1.

POSITIVE IMPACT
Higher economic production for country.

2. The job opportunities for the unemployed and

underemployed.
3. Urban growth can extend better basic services such
as transportation, sewer, and water and also other
specialist services such as better educational
facilities, health care facilities to more people.
4. When there have better opportunities, better
services and better lifestyles, the life for people in
urban area more better and also comfortable for
every people live in urban area.

NEGATIVE IMPACT

1. Migrants provide cheap, plentiful labour for emerging

factories.

2. Wages will keeps low when a large surplus labour force

because cities attract a large number of migrants looking
for employment.
3. High-density settlements are often highly polluted owing to
the lack of urban services, including running water, sewer,
trash pickup, electricity or paved roads.
4. When urban growth is sprawl, it will increase the traffic,
saps local resources and destroys open space.
5. Poorly planned urban development will effect the
environment, health, and quality of life.

COSTS
INFRASTRUCTURE
COSTS
Sprawl requires more
infrastructure such as roads,
pipes, cables and wires to service
these low-density area

ENERGY
INEFFICIENCY

Urban sprawl causes more travel from suburban to the

central city and thus more fuel consumption.
It also causes traffic congestion.
More cars on the roads driving greater distances are a
recipe for traffic gridlock resulting in more fuel
consumption.
For electricity, there will have cost on extending and
maintaining the service delivery system, as with water,
but also have loss in the commodity being delivered.
More power lost in distribution from generator.

IMPACTS ON WILDLIFE
& ECOSYSTEM

Development with sprawl will decrease the amount

of forest area, farmland and open space.
It also breaks up what is left into small chunks that
disrupt ecosystems and fragment habitats.
Roads, power lines, subdivisions and pipelines are
cut through natural area which is the wildfire
habitat and altering movement patterns.
The fragmentation of a large forest into smaller
patches will disrupts ecological processes and
reduces the availability of habitat for some species.

INCREASE IN
TEMPERATURE
On warm days, urban areas
can be 6-8F warmer

than surrounding area, an effect known as an urban

heat island.
Factors : 1. Dark surface from roadways and rooftop
absorb heat from sunlight
2. Devoid of vegetation
- trees will provide cool air through
evapotranspiration (evaporation& plant
transpiration)

Fuel combustion more production of carbon dioxide

and will effect to global climate change.
Greenhouse gas production also affected during high
temperature.
