St Nicholas Cathedral
This the cathedral in which Prince Rainier III of Monaco
married the actress Grace Kelly who then became Princess
Grace. Her body, along with his, is buried inside this
cathedral which was consecrated in 1875 and is actually
on the site of a much earlier church, built in 1252 and
dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The cathedral is the cathedral
of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Monaco-Ville and is
the place where many of the ruling family of Monaco the
Grimaldis, are buried. Inside the cathedral is a beautiful
white marble Episcopal throne and from September
through June each year, visitors can hear Les Petits
Chanteurs De Monaco.

This public beach in Monte Carlo is considered by some

Money penny to grab a lounger, your sun-tan oil and
thenrelax. That said, the beach is actually man-made
and has pea-shingle rather than sand, but the

SAINT

NATIONAL
DAY

SAINT

National Holiday : November 19th

The National Monegasque Feast Day was established by Prince
Charles III in 1857 to coincide with the Sovereign Prince Patron
Saints Day, thus constituting a moveable feast. Upon coming to the
throne in 2005, Prince Albert decided to maintain the November 19th
national holiday date, Saint Rainiers Feast Day, in memory of his
father.
The celebrations of this day in Monaco includes processions and
ceremonies and ends with a grand ball hosted by His Serene
Highness Prince Albert II.
A Thanksgiving Mass with a program of choice music, the conferring
of honors and decorations, a gala evening at the Opera House, treats
for children and elderly people and a grand firework display all
contribute to make this day of gaiety the great Festival of the
Mongasque people.

Feast of Sainte Devote, Saint Patron of Monaco and of

the Princes family : January 27th.
A feast day dedicated to the patron saint of Monaco, Dvote,
that includes a religious ceremony, blessing and torchlight
procession. It is believed that in the ninth century, Dvote
was martyred and set sail from her native Corsica. A violent
storm thrashed her boat until, as a single dove emerged from
Devotes mouth, the seas calmed. The dove led the boat to
Monacos shores, where the local Christians took her in. After
her death, a man stole her relics, he was caught and the
mans boat was burned to atone for his sin. At the end of this
annual feast, a boat is set alight.

Saint John the Baptists Feast : June 24th

On the eve of Saint John's day, 23rd June, when the
gardens of Monaco are ablaze under the setting
sun, Mongasques mindful of the customs of their
country assemble on the Palace Square.
Two days dedicated to Saint John the Baptist that
include religious services, a procession, music,
bonfire and culminates in a ball on the Place des
Moulins.

Saint Roman : August 9th

The Saint Roman Feast Committee is responsible to plan the
celebrations that extend from the end of the month of July to the
beginning of August, honouring the Saint, with the support of
Monacos Town Hall. St. Roman is one of Monacos Saint Patrons.
The high point of the celebrations takes place on August 9th, the
actual Feast Day of St. Roman, around the Altar that is
consecrated to the Saint in Monacos Cathedral. The day
concludes with a dance in the Saint Martin garden .

THE CARNIVAL
The carnival, the period between the Sunday of Epiphany and Ash Wednesday,
was the opportunity people to enjoy themselves before the long and austere
period of Lent. Young and less young disguised themselves as best they could in
old clothes, formed processions, exchanged bawdy cat calls and, holding a large
piece of cloth by the corners, threw up into the air an ungainly dummy figure
stuffed with straw and rags. Fights with projectiles, which were often far from
harmless rotten eggs, chickpeas, gravel, oranges and lemons enlivened the
passing of the procession, which usually finished with the burning of the dummy
amid general merriment. After this, weather permitting, there was dancing at
the corner of the streets or in the fields to the shrill sound of makeshift
instruments.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Guests perform the rite of the olive branch before their evening meal at their
family's house. This is an important ritual during Christmas. The youngest or
the oldest perform this rite. The guest dips an olive branch into a glass of old
wine and then moves to the fireplace. The fireplace is lit with pine and laurel
branches. The olive branch is moved to trace the sign of the holy Cross.
Doing this the guests say a few words about the olive tress' virtues. At the
end of the rite, all the members gather for the meal and wet the lips of the
guests with the same glass of wine.
Children are involved in all festivities. They march in the many Christmas
parades and family traditions.

Marriage in Monaco
A marriage in Monaco is recognised as valid in most
other countries. One of the couple getting married must
be legally resident in Monaco continuously for at least
one month before the publication of the banns (an
announcement of the intended marriage posted at the
Town Hall). Mongasque law only recognises civil
marriage. A religious ceremony may take place after the
civil procedure.
