Information on sexual health
behaviours of LGBT’s in Africa
Economic exchange plays a role:
2/3 of the men interviewed in Senegal and 52% of those in
Kenya had “received money” in exchange for sex with other men
Sexual abuse of both lesbians and gay men is common.
Perpetrators include policemen, neighbors, schoolmates and
family members
Condom use is inconsistent among MSM:
In Senegal, only 23% of the sample reported condom use during
insertive anal sex and 14 % during receptive anal sex.
Even fewer men who have sex with men consistently use condoms in
their heterosexual encounters.
Vulnerability of women who have sex
with women (WSW)
Myth that sexual activity between women poses no risk
for HIV transmission exists among health care
professionals as well as among many with WSW.
HIV has been isolated in vaginal secretions, cervical
biopsies, menstrual blood, and breast milk.
Sexual practices such as digital-vaginal as well as sex
with shared penetrative toys, may well serve as a means
for transmission of HIV-infected cervicovaginal
secretions.
Social factors also increase exposure to HIV
Many WSW are forced into arranged marriages to fulfill
perceived responsibility to family and/or to “cure”
homosexual behavior.
