Introduction to the oil vocabulary

The new generation of workers in the

oil industry

Introduction

In this presentation we are going to learnd vocabulary about the 3 sectors in witch
the oil and gas industry is divided.

UNIT 1
Upstream sector

Workers in the upstream sector find and produce crude oil

and gas

Basic questions in the

field
How do oil companies find oil and gas?
The

Do engineers always find hydrocarbons?

No, they don't. They
choose a good place for
the next step: drilling.
Drillers drill a well, and
they
sometimes
find
hydrocarbons.

Does the production start immediately after

drilling?
No. First the company does
more tests and asks how
much oil is there? and Are
there any problems? if the
results of the tests are good,
they go to the next step:
development.

Upstream
jobs

Derrickman: works high up on the monkey board about 25 meters

above the floor. He guides the top part of the drill pipes.
Crane operator: Operates a machine for lifting and moving heavy things.
Driller: Supervises a drilling crew.
Geologist: Studies rocks.
Geotechnician: Operates equipment to help geologists.
Maintenance technician: Services and repairs machines and
equipment.
Pipe-fitter: Fits pipes to make a
pipeline.
Production operator: Checks and operates production
equipment.
Roughneck: Works in a drilling crew under the drillers
supervision.

Safety
first
There are some basics safety equipment in the industry that we always
have to use in the work area.

Exploratio
n
Oil companies plan carefully before they start drilling. First they make 3D
maps of the rocks below the surface. Then they study these maps carefully.
They look for possible oil traps.
How do they make these maps?

The Reservoir
Hydrocarbons accumulations in geological traps can be classified as reservoir . A
reservoir is a porous and permeable underground formation containing an individual
bank of hydrocarbons confined by impermeable rock (seal).

Drillin
g
The process of drilling can be described as the process of make a hole, that
is to say , a well which his objective is reach the reservoir (reservoir rock) and
drive the hydrocarbons to the surface.

The hole is drilled by rotating a bit to which a downward force Is applied. The
downward force is applied to the bit using drill collars in the drillinstring
above the bit.

Productio
n
In this area the hydrocarbons are lifted by the pressure , secondary recovery
methods or artificial lifts methods to the surface, the system to the hydrocarbons
have to go through a production system, this system consists of a reservoir,
well, flowline, separators, pumps, and transportation pipelines.
