PROGRAM
The New York Arts Program is an accredited residential semester that offers students an opportunity
to advance their creative, technical and critical skills through:

o substantive apprenticeships pairing students with individual artists and arts organizations .

o companion seminars led by NYAP’s core faculty, and a range of other professional artists, curators,
and arts administrators.

o individual advising by faculty to help students define learning goals and explore career options in
the arts and creative industries.

o an independent urban living experience in a global cultural capital.

o participation in a creative community of students and professionals who bring to the program a
wide range of interests, skills and backgrounds.

o program events designed to encourage interdisciplinary discussion, and present a comprehensive
view of NY’s multi-faceted arts world

As part of New York’s creative community, NYAP has formed professional
relationships with arts practitioners and organizations across the
disciplines to build and individualize the apprenticeship program and
seminar content.

Through these relationships, students encounter a diverse ecology of

ideas, media and practices, hone their critical skills and gain professional
experience and confidence.
The NYAP community is diverse. Our students bring a
wide range of interests and can weave their various
intellectual and creative interests into apprenticeships,
seminars and independent pursuits.

"As a student at a liberal arts college it is difficult to know what
an art focused life looks like. I found that through apprenticeship,
I had the opportunity to have a full immersion experience.  My
internship opened the door to focused conversation of thinking
and making in the studio of an artist deeply engaged in
contemporary conversations  around art. I learned skills as they
were immediately appliedto work that entered museums and
galleries in New York and internationally.  I got a sense of the
discipline requiredto make art in a serious way. I also got to meet
many otherartists in the community and was given  an inside look
at the range of work being made in New York. This experienceled
me to taking on interns of my own now that I am apracticing
artist. I am so happy to continue to be a part ofthis program. "

"From my internship experiences in graphic design I have learned the
steps it takes to work with a client, to listen to their business
concepts, ideas, methods of communication, and transform it into a
creative product. I have learned to use design software in a
professional manner. The internship showed me that there is so much
more to learn after college about the real world of business methods
and standards.” Chris, OWU

“ I think I am more confident in my work and can

apply this to other areas of academia. The program
has made it more clear to me how the art world
operates and how to attempt to get your work out
there, as well as the jobs that are available and how
artists survive.”
Caitlin, Earlham College
"When I was in college, like most students, I was trying to make sense of my
passions and practices in a way that I could bring them out into the world.
I traveled to Italy, took all sorts of jobs but it wasn't until my semester in
New York with the New York Arts Program that things finally came
together. Through my internships and experiences, which remain the most
valuable of my college career, I saw how one could integrate a passion for
art with everyday life, the struggles this presents, and the drive and
dedication it takes to make a life of meaning inside a field I love.”
