V SEMESTER

Ar. Shirish Beri-Introduction

Born in November 1950.
Graduated in architecture from School

of Architecture (CEPT), Ahmadabad.

Opted for working in the mountains
near Kolhapur (with his father and
brother's architectural firm in
Kolhapur).
He felt that after studying architecture
for 6 years, it was necessary to
uncondition oneself and unlearn
rather than spend two years learning
for masters degree abroad.

STYLE
Ar. Shirish Beri's works, which tend to reflect his

values and concerns in life have been bearing their

distinct mark on modern Indian architecture since
1975.
They strive to address his life concerns of man
moving further away from nature, from his fellow
human beings and from his own self.

STYLE
His work is free, spontaneous, as it is not bound by

conditioning and constrains of a particular style or

ism.
It is intensely responsive to the site, the socio
cultural behaviour humane values and life as a
whole.
His designs address his concerns in life and
contribute towards a better quality of life.

PHILOSOPHIES
For me, it is difficult to imagine any activity as unrelated or

cut off from the totality of life. Architecture too, in its

greater vision, is life itself , thereby communicating,
responding and belonging to the fascinatingly
interrelated web of life.
It is our duty as architects to redefine and expand upon the

brief given by the client so as to give him much more besides

satisfying the functional requirements in terms of the
design's environmental relevance, quality of space and JOY.

DESIGN ISSUES
The issues that I attempt to address through
my work are :
1. An overall fragmentation resulting in a schizoid
state of life.
2. Man moving further away from Nature.
3. Man is being isolated and is missing the
meaningful interaction with fellow human beings.
4. Overcommercialization and deterioration of human
values, information overload and overconsumption
resulting from greed.

DESIGN ISSUES
The blunting of our sensitivity leading to a
boring, predictable monotony or an imposed,
gaudy ensemble.
Too much dependence on technology and an
overall loss of identity in a mass produced
environment, with a sudden break in the
traditional socio cultural continuam as well as the
handcrafting skills of craftsmen.
Destruction of natural resources and disturbing of
the ecological balance.

DESIGN ISSUES
An almost total irreverence to the contextuality of

site and climate.

Most of our modern living and work environments
make us feel exhausted and dispirited. This happens
inspite of all the measurable prerequisites of a good
work environment. What is amiss?

Mysore, Karnataka

DESIGN PROCESS
The site was a slightly undulating one at the foot of

the beautiful Chamundi hill in Mysore

Designers statement:
The objective was to impart quality education by not
just imitating the western model but by creating new
one in the Indian context. As an architect, my
endeavor was to create spaces that would act as
catalysts in this learning process.

DESIGN
In plan, there appear three functional zones (each with
its landscaped focus) integrated with each other by
transparent transitional spaces, interconnecting passages
and green courtyards.
Firstly we have the arrival court with administrative
functions and an auditorium around it.
Second is the smaller green courtyard with classrooms
and faculty rooms around.
The third is the lower level interactive courtyard between
the cafeteria the library and the yoga / exhibition hall.

S.D.M.I.M.D

S.D.M.I.M.D
The central idea of

this building design with

various courtyards is, to
facilitate communicative
interaction, which is the key
to any good management
education. The building
binds various activities
together with its
transparency and becomes a
vibrant, contribution to the
interactive learning process.
The local stone walls with
stone slate roofing creates
natural low maintenance
surfaces.

LOBBY

SPACES
Library
Computer Centre
Auditorium - The large, acoustically sound

auditorium is a showcase of discourses, seminars,

films, presentations and theatre for management
and general education. It seats 300 and is a constant
witness to cultural, educational and recreational
feats for and by the students.

SPACES
Amphitheatre - The ambience and the structure of

the amphitheatre is breath-taking. Over 500 people

can watch the cultural extravaganzas produced by
students and others. The amphitheatre is also a
meeting place where students can relax.
Hostel - Fully furnished single rooms, lounge/study
area, recreational facilities, and a common dining
area create a mini world of its own.

SPACES
Gymnasium
Suvidha - Suvidha is an equity-funded

departmental store conceived and run by students.

MATERIALS
The local stone is used

for masonry, Sira stone

for amphitheatre steps
and copings. Chinkurli
rough granite for pargola
columns and beams. Slate
stone is used for roof and
parapet cladding. The
entrance court walls have
glass mosaic.

BEACH HOUSE, DEVGAD, MAHARASHTRA

BEACH HOUSE
The idea of having a beach house germinated in my

fascination with the sea and in my faith in Nature's

healing, refreshing and rejuvenating potential. Along
with physical stimulation that the sea offers in the
form of swimming, jogging on the beach, playing in
the sand, etc., the beach house offered a peaceful
natural environment with the soothing sound and
sight of the waves breaking on the shore
-Ar. Shirish Beri

BEACH HOUSE
Care has been taken to "blend"

the home into its magnificent

backdrop.
The home is overly simplistic,
and so is the decor. The oneroom habitat has been designed
brilliantly with strategically
placed windows to catch every
bit of nature one can, even
while indoors

BEACH HOUSE-DESIGN
Taking advantage of the
undulating site
conditions, the following
was achieved:
Raised plinth for a better
view for the main living
and kitchen area.
Segregation at slightly
lower level for service
areas like porch, utility &
servants room.

BEACH HOUSE-DESIGN
Mezzanine floor studio-bed

at 1.1 M above the main

level with better view as
well as privacy.
A changing area with
bathroom & W.C. below the
mezzanine floor with a
direct access from the beach
after a swim (this prevents
the wetness and sand from
spreading all over the house

BEACH HOUSE-DESIGN
The house is basically one single unified space under

one roof. Different functions are differentiated by

low partition walls, curtains, different levels, etc., but
the essential flow of space continues uninterrupted
merging with the surrounding nature.

MATERIALS
The flooring is cow

dung and mud. The

studio has a timber
floor.
The house is
constructed from the
local laterite stone
with a hipped timber
roof structure and
Mangalore tiles.

DESIGN-CLIMATOLOGY
The house is designed for the coastal climate

allowing for maximum air circulation inside, but at

the same time being able to contain the fierce wet
stormy monsoon winds from the west and
southwest.
