THE PURPOSE OF AN ADVERT IS TO PERSUADE CONSUMERS TO BUY A

PRODUCT. THIS IS OFTEN DONE BY SUGGESTING A PARTICULAR
LIFESTYLE, PERSONALITY OR IMAGE THAT PEOPLE WOULD WANT FOR
THEMSELVES OR RECOGNISE IN THEMSELVES. THE ADVERT WOULD
SUGGEST THAT THE ABOVE CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH BUYING THE

P!NK: MAGAZINE AD

Star Image and Representation: Here P!nks star image is her conventional one. She
depicted as fun-loving and cheerful, with intertextuality with the carnival
which has similar connotations. Shes wearing a pink show girl leotard, with
feathery decorative trimming which represents her as a star, and has
intertextual references to circus performance and free spirited carnival
workers, who live life free from most restrictions upon society.
This represents her and the album as free spirited and carefree. The fact that
p!nk is riding a carnival horse strengths the connotations of freedom, with the
carnival style being continued through the font and colour scheme, with pink
and yellow being warm and joyful colours. The fact that she is positioned in
the middle of the cover implicates the importance of her star image, and the
importance of her carefree attitude in the album.
Genre: From the album you can tell that the genre is going to be almost
pop/punk in nature with the connotations of freedom with the combination of

IMAGE ANALYSIS The first

thing that catches my

which is
suitable for this album

Target audience : Taylor swift seems to be targeting

teenaged girls, as she has used a strong but
simple colour scheme, to attract female
teenagers, as red, is a colour used, usually to
attract a female audience. Her target audience,
would be high schools and teenage girls,
females who can identify with her, in what she
wears and how she does her hair for example.

iconic red, which not only makes the text stand
out. The consumer are able to make the link
between the name of the album and the colour.

TAYLOR SWIFT : MAGAZINE AD

Colour - The title of the Album is red and so the colour is

boldly featured on the front cover. It is only used for the
title which instantly draws the reader in. Taylor Swift is
also wearing a bright red lip stick which suggests that she
has changed her identity, having matured from a country
girl into a woman. This sex appeal is new to her and the
red emphasises her lips and her being a woman.
This could also symbolise the change in the style of
music, perhaps also suggesting a hint of danger, giving
the impression of Taylor Swift being Dangerous. This will
appeal to a different target audience than her previous
ones. The other colours included are simple like her top

Taylor Swift is the majority of

the album cover as her agency
wants to promote her and as
she is famous and a icon then
this will grab her audience. It
would also be easily
recognisable for her fans or the
public.
It communicates the genre as
this is a new concept for her
album covers as it shows her
maturity and a new direction
for her identity and music. It is
sleek and mature which will be

the danger or sexuality that is highlighted by the red colour that

her fans/ audience may never have seen before.

She is not looking directly at the audience which again implies

that she may have a secret. The album cover is very simple
compared to her other covers which has glamour such as the
pictures shown.

ANALYSIS OF CD DIGIPACK: TAYLOR SWIFT

This digipak is for Rihanna's album Talk

That Talk. This is a R&B album that
incorporates other genre's such as pop,
hip-hop and dance. The album revolves
around romance.
The cover suggests what music will be
found on the album as she subverting from
stereotypical female conventions, by
exhaling marijuana. Drugs are highly
associated with the hip-hop genre. Her
mouth is opened which is very suggestive.
This sexualises her image. Rihanna's image
features heavily on the digipak showing
that her image is important to her.

RIHANNA

Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze is featured

heavily on this digipak, as we see Rihanna
in a variety of positions and shots, this is
to show the artist appearance as desirable
and appealing. Target audience would see
the album, and the artist pictures, and
aspire to be and look like her.

ANALYSIS OF UNRELATED GENRE

Rihanna is featured on the majority of this digipack; she is

featured on the front and back cover, the booklet and both
posters. However not on the CD itself. The CD itself,
contains text and the artist full name, in block print. The
image on the CD resembles an old fashioned newspaper.

This is the digipack for

Rihannas album Talk That
Talk; Rihanna is a singer,
who has gained world-wide
success from her pop music.
The digipack is all in black
and white, and has a bad
girl feel to it, the writing
and the way some of images
are shown are similar to how
criminals were advertised on
wanted posters. The
digipack consists of the
front cover, back cover, CD,
2 pictures and a booklet.

The album cover, the image of the artist, is a CU is seen

exhaling smoke and looking directly into the camera,
reinforcing the Bad girl theme to the album. They have
used the same album cover image, for the panel for the
were the CD goes, but this image is edited to assume the
appearance of an old fashion wanted poster.
The next image is a Low angled, LS of Rihanna sitting on
steps, in shorts and a bikini suit type costume. Her big
boots add a rock star feel to the album. The image on the
back of the album, is of the artist smoking a joint, in a
tuxedo and shorts with fishnet tights, this reinforces the
bad girl style she is trying to portray, as bad girls are
normally seen smoking, drinking, doing drugs and not
caring. This is definitely the feel she's gibing off in this
album, a completely different style to the digipacks I have
analysed so far.
