Seeking for an idea we went into

Indias rural background and came
across a fact that Pitcher Pots are of
immense importance in numerous
fields.
So implementing this thought we
have innovated a new technique to
store drinking water in rural
areas, but this time on a larger scale.

Foundation of idea lies

on what all we can
Nirmaan

Ghada ye project hai

BADA
Is all about how we can introduce a
completely
New drinking water system in rural
areas by introducing
a practice which is sustainable, costeffective and locally manageable

Plastic Tanks

Refrigerator

Going Into
Technicality

tcher pots are made of cla

which have a unique
property of porosity and
through pores a continuous
process of water cycle takes
place keeping the material
inside it cool and fresh.

THROUGH THIS PLAN WE

PROPOSE THAT PITCHER POTS
CAN BE USED AS

an alternative of
water storing
polyplastic tanks

an alternative
of refrigerator

Need for replacement

Demerits of Polyplastic tanks

Polyplastic tanks are made up of
polyethylene,a UV based food grade plastic .
Water stored in such tanks for a longer
duration cause water borne diseases due to
the harmful effect of petrochemicals present
in polyethylene.
Even when their serviceable life has ended
there is a hunk of plastic that takes
generations to break down and release toxins
as it does so.
Installing polyplastic tanks at house roofs
acts as just water reservoir and then arises
the need to cool it by the use of water coolers
which requires additional money and space.

Demerits of refrigerators

Refrigerators release large amount

of CFCs in the environment which
is one of the major greenhouse
gases causing ozone layer
depletion.

CFCs stand for chloro flouro

carbons and are have severe
environmental impact.

Ozone layer depletion causes

global warming and

SO keeping in mind all

these demerits we have
formulated a plan to
overcome them and
provide a sustainable
source of drinking water
to the consumers.

Four basic Levels involved

in our Plan

Source of
water
supply for
approx.
200 village

Filteratio
n of
water

Storing
water in
water
reservoir

Coolin
g
water

1) Source of water supply

Our plan involves supply of
clean and Fresh drinking
water in a village of
approximately 200 people.
Source of water would be Govt.
supply through jal nigam etc.
whereby a govt tanker of
capacity 1000 lit would fill up
all

2) Water
Filteration

Water is passed through a pot

consisting Of layers of gravel ,
sand and charcoal.
Sand and Gravel will restrict the
impurities having grain size
greater than their own.
Charcoal absorbs coloured
organic wastes from water. Thus

Water purification system

Water Reservoir
Water reservoir used here is a pitcher
pot of capacity 25 lts.
It will be connected to the filteration
system shown in above slide.
Purified water will be stored in these
pots
Our idea of storing water basically
stands on the foundation of multiple
pot system.
Using the concept of pascals law which
states that liquid seeks its own
level,we have installed numerous pots

Using Basic concept

that liquid seeks its
own level

Multiple Pot System

is used to create a

4) Water Cooling
system
The next
thing we need
to do is cool this water
keeping in mind
It should remain so for a
longer
Duration of time.
Nothing suited best to
the plan

How to do that????
Take two pots of varying size such
that one pot
fits inside another.

Keep the pot one into another.

As shown in one of the slide above ,

temperature of water stored inside
inner pot will lower down by the
process of evaporation through pores
of inner pot.

Now we fill the area in between two

pots with sand (water absorbing
substance).
This provides
a cooling
atmosphere around the inner pot
which keeps water inside it cool
for a longer duration.

The outer pot installed keeps the hold

the sand and also provide an additional
layer for cooling water.
Durability of pots maybe a concern so
for that whole of the pot system will be
surrounded by a concrete wall and each
pot will be covered with the cotton lid.
And with this our completely insulated
water cooling system will be ready which
can be used for drinking purpose with no
side effects and numerous benefits.

Cycle Showing the complete

Process
Water escapes
out through
pores of surface
of inner pot by
evaporation

Further sand
absorbs water ,
continuously
providing cooler
environment to
the inner pot.

The outer pot is

used for holding
sand between
outer and inner
pots.

Benefits of our plan

This water can be used for

direct consumption by the
villagers.
Clean and cool water will be
available easily in the
vicinity of their houses.
Even taste and essence of
water of pitcher pot is very
good due to moist clay.
This reduces the threat of
water borne diseases in the
village.

Installing this type of system at a

single place in a village will
comparitively occupy lesser area
than setting up an individual tank
in each house of the village.
This practice is immensely cost
effective as pitcher pots are very
cheap and even the materials used
for purification are easily available
at low cost.
It will provide employment to a
large mass of village as this
process will bring revolution for

This plan can also be used as

A refrigerator for storing many Things.

Vegetables are kept inside the

inner pot with a moist cloth
covering them.

The sand surrounding the inner pot

is kept moist by watering it two
times a day.
This provides a cool atmosphere at
the surface of the inner pot which
keeps the vegetables fresh for a
duration of 2-3 days.

So according to us, if our

idea is implemented it will
benefit the people of small
villages of india who are
often ignored by the
government..
As Neil Armstrong said
A single step for man and
a giant step for a mankind!!
