"Green Building" : What does it mean ??

A Green Building is a structure that caters the basic criterias of
building and is environmentally responsible throughout its life cycle.
It is basically a practice of creating structures and using processes
that are environmental friendly and are resource efficient ,starting from
selection of sites, construction,operation, maintenance,renovation & even
deconstruction.

Objective of Green Building :

To satisfy human need on one hand & on the other hand to reduce the
overall impact of the built environment on human health & nature.
But how this objective is attained ????
incorporating sustainable materials in construction.
efficiently using water, energy & other resources.
creating healthy indoor environment with minimal pollutant.
protecting occupant health
structurally sufficient enough to sustain any damage
reducing wastes, pollution and environmental degradation.

Components of a Green Building

Site :
The site for constructing a Green Building should :
not interfere negatively with the near-by environment.
have sufficient space for walking and parking.
should have ground water at a reasonable depth,so that the
foundation should not interfere with it.
soil of the site should have sufficient strength to sustain load
and if its not ,then it can be reinforced with plastic
wastes ,which can increase its strength as well as this can
reduce pollution.

ORIENTATION : It is very important to orient the building in such a

way that we can utilize the renewable forms of energy like sunlight ,
and wind energy as maximum as possible.
This can reduce the consumption of electricity and cost by 30%.
Recommended ways for orientation of Green Buildings :
the longest wall should face the south direction.
it should have orientation such that shelters the small plants nearby
from extreme heat , and in turn the plants purify the near-by air with
rich Oxygen.
slant roofs for areas having
max rainfall and high temperature

Water :
An efficient way of consuming water in case of a Green
Building are as follows :
such buildings have a provision of rain-water harvesting, thereby
it efficiently stores the rain water and this water is used for
various small purposes. Whereas an ordinary building doesn't have
such provisions , and whatever rain falls ,it gets drained out.
dual-flushing toilet system is provided in such buildings
there is a separate provision of draining the sewage and nonsewage waters(GREY WATER), so that the non-sewage water which
is relatively less polluted can be used for watering lawns using
sprinkling ways.
faucet aerators can be used in bathrooms, as this will reduce the
water flow by 30% than that of standard flow by taps.
even water sense models taps can be used instead of faucets.

SAVE WATER

Energy Consumption : Green Building should rely on renewable forms of

energy , inorder to lessen the pressure on non-renewable resources.
What will happen if we use renewable resources ????
by proper utilizing the daylight and wind potential in ventilation, we
can reduce the need of lighting in interior of houses, therby reducing
the need of electricity 40-60%
we can have a provision of small wind mills at terrace which can
produce some amount of power, which later can be used in small
household works like charging an Inverter.
provision of solar panels at roof top can generate tremendous
power(in megawatts), which can be specially used for villages .This can
be a boon as the villages don't get a continuos electricity.
in vilages ,biological waste products can be effectively used to
produce Bio-Gas , which can be used for cooking purposes. This will
reduce the depletion of coal and fuels, as there is no provision of CNG
in such areas, so people resort to burn coal and woods for cooking.

The fig. describes some of the energy utilization patterns

Construction Materials :
It is the most important component of Green Building. The ecofriendly materials which can be used intead of the traditional ones
are :
WOOL BRICK : natural polymer is added in clay brick and then
brick is made.
it has more strength (>30%)than burnt brick.
provide insulation for cold and wet climate ,so our dependency
on heaters & water-resistant synthetic coating is reduced.
SUSTAINABLE CONCRETE:
crushed glass + wood chips + byproduct of
steel manufacturing.
reduces the emission of CO2.
SOLAR TILES :
used at roof tops to absorb sunlight.

Solar tiles

PAPER INSULATION :
made from recycled newspaper and card
boards ,and then are filled with chemical
foams(fire-retardants),and are then
applied on wooden panels.
it acts as an insect-resistant medium .
highly economical.

TRIPPLE-GLAZED WINDOW :
super-efficient window.
stops the extreme heat to enter
the building,thereby keeping the
interior cool.This reduces the use
of AC, and so lessen the CFCs
emission.

BAMBOO REINFORCEMENT:
economical
no problem of rusting.
has high strength to weight
ratio
easily available so cost of
transportation is lesser.
can be used as
rafters,columns & truss
elements

ORGANIC PAINTS :
less volatile organic compounds(VOC) is used as
paint
when such paints chips out,it doesn't impair
the health of the occupants.
clay plaster is also used, which gives a
good appearance.

Indoor Air Quality :

Green Building should have proper
ventilation of ensure that there is
a fresh supply of air inside
the building.
Designated indoor spaces as
"smoke-free".

SCOPE OF GREEN BUILDINGS IN INDIA

The govt. agencies which accridates the buildings as "Green Building"
in India are:
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design)
GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)
TERI (The Energy & Resources Institute).
MNRE (Ministry of New & Renewable Energies)
ADARSH

Green Buildings in India :

ITC Green Centre, Gurgaon
0% water discharge.
53% energy saving
1st platinum rated building

CII-Godrej, Hyderabad (platinum rated)

Wipro Technologies,Gurgaon (platinum rated)

NEG Micon ,Chennai (gold rated)

Merits & Demerits of Green Buildings :

Merits :
energy efficient
easier maintenance
waste reduction
economical construction for
poor
healthier lifestyle &
recreation
return on investment.

Demerits :
need skilled worker
need more time to construct
initial cost is high
sometimes the materials are
not available.

Why Green Building better than conventional Buildings ????

Typical Model of Green Building :

Conclusion :
To Preserve the nature ,the work should start from
our individual homes, in the form of converting our
buildings as "Green Buildings".
The integrated effect of such an eco-friendly technique
will definetely reduce the environment related problems
& will create a resourceful environment for future
generation.
