SUGGESTOPEDIA

Learning is a matter of attitude, not aptitude.

Georgi Lozanov

AYSUN YANAR
DİLBER DİNÇER
PINAR ÇETİNKAYA
BACKGROUND
 A Teaching method
 Accelerated learning
 Suggestology
 A humanistic approach
 The most noticeable characteristics
 Memorization according to Lozanov
 The other important feature
Music in therapy has three
functions;
 The facilitating the establishment and
maintenance…
 Bringing about increased self-esteem…
 Using the unique potential of rhythm..
Theory of language

 Lozanov does not articulate a theory of

language
 Language material in ‘whole meaningful
text’
 the centrality of lexical translation
Theory of learning
 This method is based on suggestion and
desuggestion
 Suggestion:loading the human memory
banks with desired and faciliating
memories
 Desuggestion:unloading the human
memorybanks of unwanted, blocking
memoirs.
Theory of learning
6 principal theoretical components

 AUTHORITY
 INFANTILIZATION
 DOUBLE-PLANEDNESS
 INTONATION
 RHYTHM
 CONCERT PSEUDO-PASSIVENESS
DESIGN:
Objective
advanced conversational profiency quickly

 to eliminate negative feelings

Four factors considered essential:

 Relaxed and comfortable learning

environment
 The use of soft

Baroque music
 Desuggestion

 Suggestibility
Syllabus
 30-day course, 10 units
 4 hours a day, six days a week

 Day 1

-discussing the general content of the

unit dialogue
 Day 2 and 3

-primary and secondary elaboration

Learning activities
 imitation,

 question and answer

 role play
Learner roles
 Students volunteer for a suggestopedic
course
 They must tolerate and encourage their
own infantilization
 The students must trust and respect the
teacher
Teacher roles;
 The creator of situations
 The presenter of linguistic materials

 The motor of suggestopedia machine

 The author of the

classroom
 Absolute confidence
 Fastidious conduct
 Proper organization and strict observation
 Serious attitude
 Giving tests and responding
 Stress global
 A modest enthusiasm
Materials
Direct support materials;
Text and tape
Indirect support materials;
Classroom fixtures and music
Chairs in a circle
techniques
 Classroom set-up:emphasis is placed on
creating a physical environment that does not feel
like a normal classroom.
 Peripheral learning:students can absorb
information effortlessly when it is perceived as part
of the environment
 Positive suggestion:teacher appeal to students
consciousness and subconscious in order to better
orchestrate the learning process
 Role play: students pretend temporarily that they
are someone else and perform a role using the target
language.

 Choosing a new identity: the students

choose a target language name and new occupation.
 First concert; a slow,dramatic reading of
the dialogue with classical music
 Second concert; teacher’s reading the
script at normal speed without music
 Primary activation; rereading the target
language out loud
 Secondary activation; various activities
designed to help the students learn
procedure

 3 distinct parts of four-hour class

 1. oral review of the material
previously learned
 2. a new material is presented and
discussed
 3. concert session --- the heart of the
method
CONCLUSION

 Suggestopedia is a method where the

materials played a big role in order to
achieve the objective of the lesson.
 Suggestopedia received both the most
enthusiastic and the most critical
response.
Advantages

 Motivation and self esteem is increased

 Music helps long term memorization
 Games and free activities help
memorizing.
Disadvantages

 The colorful and comfortable classroom

environment is not easy to find
 Music played at the background causes
concentration problems
 No homework may decrease the
students ability to use language
creatively.
