Katha brings
to life valour
of Param Vir
Chakra
Awardees
Amar Chitra Katha, with the guidance of the Indian Army and the
Indian Air Force, has narrated the stories of the 21 Param Vir Chakra
awardees, who braved incredible odds and stood steadfast against the
enemy to protect the country.
Topping the list is Major Som Nath Sharma, PVC, (1923-1947), who was
the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, the highest Indian gallantry
award. Major Sharma of 4th Kumaon Regiment was awarded the medal
posthumously for his bravery in the Kashmir operations in 1947.
Then comes Major Shaitan Singh, who was the second recipient the
Param Vir Chakra from Kumaon Regiment. Major Shaitan Singh of 13th
Kumaon was honoured with Param Vir Chakra in 1962 after the IndiaChina war.
The Param Vir Chakra is Indias highest military honour; an honour that
is only awarded to those soldiers who display the greatest degree of
valour and self-sacrifice on the battlefield. Since its inception on our
first Republic Day in 1950, 21 heroes have so far been awarded the
medal. The sensitively portrayed stories will take the readers up close
and into the heart of the battles they fought and give you an insight
into the lives and mind of some of the most courageous men our
country have ever known.
The book was launched by Lt. Gen. Rakesh Sharma UYSM, AVSM, VSM at
the Defence Headquarters, South Block, in New Delhi.
