Green space may consist of a broad range of landscape

characters from highly maintained parks, gardens, avenues,

playing fields and churchyards to natural landscape
environments.
Water systems such as open water, rivers, streams and storm
water systems are usually included in green space and are
also referred to as the blue structure in the field of urban
and regional planning.

IMPORTANCE OF GREEN OPEN SPACE IN URBAN AREAS

Research shows that there is a great need for environmental

diversity, where the potential of green spaces is highlighted as a
potential improvement of the quality of life for all citizens. A
broad structural range and a variation at different scales of
green spaces in urban areas are important to satisfy different
needs within the society.

variety of opportunities, social and cultural diversity and
physical settings are highly valued.
Regional landscape and open space provide metropolitan areas
with a number of important activities, functions and ecosystem
services, including:
Outdoor recreation areas for the urban population and
tourists.
Infrastructure corridors that facilitate the movement of energy
and water to the urban areas.
Natural resources for building and construction purposes.
Open space that provides scenic amenity that contributes to
regional landscape identity.
Water catchments that safeguard urban water supplies.
Farming lands that supply urban areas with food and farming
production.
Rural landscape that provides residential locations

Gandhi Chowk, located in Hamirpur district of Himachal

Pradesh is the main market region of the area. Stretching for
almost 3 kilometres it has a large variety of retail spaces
including showrooms, street shops, eating joints, a post office,
a police station, etc.
It is a very busy region as it attracts a large number of people
for meeting their daily needs as well as providing jobs. It acts
as a primary area for social interaction among people of
different age groups.
The shops run along the sides of the main road. A lot of the
local vendors bring out their stalls on the roads which creates
congestion on the roads and leads to over crowding. The lack of
green spaces add to this congestion and over crowding.
The structured environment of the region needs to be
monitored and developed in an organized manner so that green
spaces may be included in the design. The number of trees

WALKWAYS & CORRIDORS

Strengths
Existing parks like Mridul park,
play ground opposite bus stand.
Existing land pressure is not as
large as compared to larger
urban areas.
Climatic conditions are suitable to
support a variety of vegetation.
Sufficient water supply through
rains and storm water.
Opportunities
Multiple barren pieces of lands
are being used as dumping
grounds that can instead be used
for developing green spaces.
Regulations can be implemented
to enhance green facades.
Plantations
should
be
encouraged on the roadsides.
Alternate vehicular movement
should be provided.

Weaknesses
Lack of artificially created
green spaces.
Natural greens are not
maintained.
Lack of awareness and interest
of the community to develop
green spaces.
Continuous unorganized
construction.
Threats
Increasing
urban
population
leading to a need of construction
of different structures.
Degrading climatic conditions.
Lack
of
community
consciousness.
