METHODOLOGY

Study Typeit is an observational type of descriptive epidemiological study


Study Designit is hospital based & Cross-sectional
Study Areathe study was conducted in ESI-PGIMSR & ESIC MCH,Joka running for
the last 25 yrs,With a capacity of 350 beds and caters services to only Ips ,associatd
with a medical college for last three years.
Study Settingsthe study was conducted in Medicine OPD, Surgery OPD, Eye OPD
Study Duration & Periodit was conducted for 4 weeks(1st-28th March,2016) & was
divided into 4 phases:
1st weekPreparatory Phase- the concept of project was explained and a
questionnaire was prepared
2nd weekData Collection- pilot study was done and the questionnaire was
modified,then data was collected
3rd week Data Compilation & Analysis
4th weekPresentation & Report Writing
Study Populationit comprised of Diabetic Patients who attended the Medicine,
Surgery, Eye OPD during our data collection period from 10am to 12 oclock
Sample Size & Sampling TechniqueSample size-88; Complete enumeration was
followed; No sampling was done.

Patients who did not give consent

Statistical analysisThe collected data was
entered in MS Excel, frequency and percentage were
calculated. Data was represented in tables ,pie charts,

SUMMARY
Majority (67%) of the subjects were in the age group of 50-70 years.
Predominantly found in female (56.8%)
Most of them were hindus (92%)
Urban people are more susceptible
Majority (95.5%) of the subjects were married
Most of the subjects were educated above primary level(86.4%)
Most of the males are in job(41%) & most of the females are unskilled workers (96.6%)
most of the subjects belongs to lower middle class(33%)
Most of the subjects were pre-hypertensive (70%)
Most of the subjects were overweight(62.9%)
Only 31% of the subjects had a positive family history of diabetes.
Most of the subjects were found to be leading a sedentry lifestyle( 58%)
Only 22% of the subjects were addicted to alcohol
Only 33% of the subjects were tobacco user.

Summary contd.

68% of the subjects are on Oral medication, 29% on


Combined Drug therapy and only 3% on inj. Insulin.
61% of the subjects are on healthy diet.
More than 2/3rd of the subjects were suffering from Eye
complications, more than 50% of the subjects were
suffering from CVS complications. Other complications that
were noted were Diabetic foot (3,.4%), Oral health
complications (18.2%), Kidney complications (5.7%),
Respiratory n CNS Complications 22.7% each
Majority of the subjects attend follow-up sessions (89.8%)
Nearly half of the subjects were aware about the
hypoglycaemic coma(53.4%)
Majority of the subjects had no knowledge about glucometer
(64.8)
Majority of the subjects had no knowledge about foot
care(53.4%)

CONCLUSION
After overall assessment of study subjects
Most of the population were females above 50years, hindu by
religion, married, educated above primary level, employed, residing in
urban areas and from nuclear families.
Among the risk factors, obesity was most common followed by
sedentary lifestyle, tobbaco use, alcohol intake, unhealthy diet &
positive family history.
Most of the subjects reported moderate adherence to the medications.
Most of the study subjects attended follow-up sessions &were aware
of hyypoglycemic coma.
However most of them had no knowledge about glucometer and foot
care.
Eye and CVS complications were present in more than half of the
subjects.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Obesity should be controlled


Excessive fatty diet to be avoided and consultation with the
Dietician to be encouraged
Alcohol and Tobacco consumption should be stopped.
Those having high risk _ positive family history should go for
regular checkup and follow up.
Patient should consult the referrals and should be awared about
complications.
Patient should be educated about medical adjustments and self
care regarding complications.
Awareness about the alarming symptom of diabetes.
