New Behaviours

in New Role Profiles

1 Draft and for discussion

Purpose
To enable you to
understand identifying
levels for the new
Behaviours

To simplify the transition

in job descriptions from
Competencies to
Behaviours

2 Draft and for discussion

Approach

Deadline is Q2 of this year

We should take opportunities as they arise to make the
changes
When recruiting for jobs
When creating new jobs
When restructuring and looking at groups of roles

Key points
The levels within the behaviours are not necessarily linked with
seniority or the level of the role.
Not all of the behaviours need necessarily be set at the same
level. While the Essential level may be required for one
behaviour, the More Demanding level may be appropriate for
another.
Determining the levels will be a joint agreement between
managers and individuals.

From Competencies to Behaviours

Competency Dictionary

New British Council Behaviours

13 competencies
Each with 4 levels (with the
exception of Achievement with 5
levels and Intercultural
Competence with 2)
Different competencies selected
for different jobs; not all used in
every job description

6 behaviours
Each is described in 3 Levels;
'Essential', 'More demanding' and
'Most demanding
All jobs require at least the
Essential' level
All jobs require all 6 of the
behaviours

How do you decide what level of

a Behaviour is relevant to a
role ?

8 Draft and for discussion

Step 1

Consider duties and the context,

complexity and nature of the work
span of control
sphere and level of influence; internal and external
main focus strategic or delivery?

Look at the Behaviours and consider which level this indicates

would apply to the role

9 Draft and for discussion

Step 2

Look at the current person specification

Check the level of the Competencies required

If the current Job Description requires Competencies at the

highest levels, check the Most Demanding descriptors

If the current Job Description requires Competencies at the

lower levels, check the Essential descriptors

What is the better fit? Find the best match

10 Draft and for discussion

Step 3
Taking account of the thinking you have done in Steps 1
and 2, decide what level within the new British
Council Behaviours is appropriate
