DIPSTICK TEST

GROUP 4

PROCEDURE
1. Use on the normal and abnormal urine samples
dipstick test strips provided by your instructor.
2. Dip the strip completely, but briefly, into
specimen.
3. Compare the reaction colors with the
manufacturer's chart. Report your observations.
(NOTE: Compare the results using dipstick with
the results of the tests above.)

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

ABNORMAL
URINE

NORMAL
URINE

1.) Why is it important to time your

observation of test strips carefully after
dipping them in the sample to be
tested?
Each pads contain reagents for different
reaction, thus allowing for the
simultaneous determination of several
tests.
Time is important to obtain accurate and
reliable results with the dipsticks. Certain
precautions must be taken to help
maintain the reactivity of the reagents.

2.) List the causes of premature

deterioration of reagent strips, and
explain how they can be avoided.
Causes of premature deterioration
Moisture
Volatile
Chemicals
Heat
Light

2.) List the causes of premature

deterioration of reagent strips, and
explain how they can be avoided.
Proper Storage
Stored at temperature 15C - 30C
Do not use after expiration date
Reagent strips must be kept in its original
bottle with the cap tightly closed to maintain
reactivity

2.) List the causes of premature

deterioration of reagent strips, and
explain how they can be avoided.
Proper Handling
All unused strips must remain in the original bottle
Do not remove desiccant(s) from the bottle
Do not combine urine strips with different lot
number together
Do not touch test areas of the reagent strip.
When testing, dip test areas in urine completely, but
briefly, to avoid dissolving of reagents. Read test
results carefully at time specified, in a good light
and with the test area held near.

3. List 5 quality control procedures routinely

performed with reagent strip testing.
Positive and negative controls at least once per 24 hrs.
Additional controls run when new bottle is opened, when
results are questionable, when strip integrity is
questionable.
Do not use distilled water as a negative control because
strips are designed for urine ionic concentration.
Be aware of manufacturer limitations
Correlate chemical readings to each other.

5.) Why is the reagent strip method

more accurate and sensitive than
other chemical test?
Quick screening of urine chemistry
Reliable, specific and sensitive
Avoid the use of various corrosive reagents,
different type of glass wares and other
laboratory material required for wet chemical
testing of urine.
It can be performed in uncentrifuged urine
and doesnt require acidification.
