Economics - When to Quit

Fishing?

D = Maximum Days To Fish

V = Value Of Fish
Cs = Cost Of Sidetrack
Fd = Fishing daily Cost
Rd = Rig Daily Cost

D=

____ V + Cs___ 100,000 + 500,000

Fd + Rd
10,000 + 50.000
D = 10 Days

Free-point and Pipe Recovery

Free-point tool
Always check stretch and torque - including
left hand torque if back-off is an option.

Back-off with String Shot

At the second free connection if appropriate
to casing seat and well bore geometry and not
in a air drilled hole.

Free-point and Pipe Recovery

Chemical Cutter
Poor track record in attempting to cut greater
than 0.450 wall thickness.

Jet Cutter
Can cut pipe in liquid or dry environment.
Do not have to apply torque to drill pipe.
Does flare the O.D. of the fish.

Free-point and Pipe Recovery

Owens Split Shot
Not a good option in drill pipe in a high angle
hole.

Radial Torch Cutter

Can cut drill pipe in liquid or dry environment.
Do not have to apply torque to drill pipe.
Does not flare the O.D. of the fish.

Free-point and Pipe Recovery

Severing Tool
This is not a fishing option.
If attempting to sever drill pipe not drill
collars, fire the severing tool in the tool
joint.

Fishing Loose Junk Bit Cones & etc.

Core Type Basket
Magnet
Mill
Reverse Circulation Basket
Wash Pipe w/ Finger Basket that will allow
you to rotate the drill pipe freely.

Catching a Fish in a Horizontal

Well
Screwing into a previously backed off
connection
Run a slick screw-in assembly the same
O.D. as the fish top.
A skirted screw-in assembly makes the
screw-in assembly track at a different level
in the high angle hole.

Overshot is the preferred tool.
Soft/Medium Formation Run as small an
overshot as will make the catch.
Hard Formation Overshot selection is
typically no closer than of bit size as
would be the case in a vertical straight
hole.

Jarring Options and Placement

Vertical Straight Hole
Place jarring assembly within two joints of the stuck
point if appropriate to casing seat and well bore
geometry.

Curve
Never place the jars in the curve.

Horizontal Straight Hole

Place jarring assembly within two joints of the stuck
point if appropriate to casing seat and well bore
geometry.

Impact/Impulse Calculations
Vertical Straight Hole
Jarring at 90,000 pounds over pull with six 4
Drill Collars w/ Oil and Intensifier Jars placed 2,000
from the stuck point generates an Impact of 118,100
pounds and an Impulse of 2,712.

Horizontal Straight Hole

Jarring at 60,000 pounds over pull with three joints of
3 HWDP w/ Oil and Intensifier Jars placed 62
from the stuck point generates an Impact of 313,604
pounds and an impulse of 2,934.
