General knowledge
-A document that describes how welding is to
be carried out in production
-Recommended for all welding operations
- Application of codes and standards choose it
as mandatory

WPS is a written document that provides

direction to the welder or welding
operator for making production welds in
accordance with Code requirements.
It should contain enough information to
give direction to the welder and should
address all variables associated with the
welding process.

EN ISO 15609-1 (EN 288 Part 2)

-European Standard For Welding Procedure
Specifications
-Defines the contents of a Welding Procedure
Specification in the form of a list of
information that should be recorded
-some applications it may be necessary to
supplement or reduce the list

ASME IX American Boiler and Pressure Vessel

Code
-Welding and brazing qualifications
-Lists the variables for each welding process,
all the variables stated should be addressed
-The range permitted by the WPS is dictated
by the PQR

Each manufacturer or contractor shall

maintain a record of the results obtained in
welding procedure.
-Welder and welding operator performance
qualifications.
-All records shall be certified by the
manufacturer or contractor and shall be
accessible to the Authorized Inspector.

Parameter classed into essential, supplementary essential

and nonessential
Variables listed in QW-250 through QW-280 and are
defined in Article IV, Welding Data.
The information can be transform to produced a weld
with acceptable quality
The detail requirement is dependence on the application
and criticality of the joint

All joint types approve each other. i.e. A

double sided weld approves a single sided
weld and vice versa.
No limits on diameter approval for pipe.
A plate procedures can be used to weld any
diameter of pipe
Materials and welding consumables are listed
in groups

Any butt weld will qualify all fillet weld sizes

on any parent metal thickness.
A welding procedure qualified in one position
approves all positions.
The code covers wide range of welding
processes and applications such as hard
facing, stud welding, brazing etc.

Essential Variables
variables that have a significant affect on
the mechanical properties of a joint.
They must not be changed except within the
limits specified by this code.
e.g. Material thickness range, Material Group
etc.

Non-Essential Variables
Variables that have no significant affect on
mechanical properties.
Can be changed without re qualification of the
PQR.
Supplementary Variables
Variables that have an affect on the impact
properties of a joint.
Classed as Non-Essential if impact testing is not
required
