Racism

What is Racism?
The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities
specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to
another race or races.
Racism is the belief that because people are a different color, or from a
different country that they are inferior. It can take many forms. For example,
it is racist to deny a black or Asian person a job simply on the basis of the
color of their skin.

Racism In a Nutshell
o Slavery was not an invention of the middle ages - it had existed for more
than a thousand years, but it started to become a more organized trade
towards the end of the fourteenth century
oFascism was particularly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, when fascist
parties held power
o used racist and nationalist ideas to increase their support.

oThe American civil rights movement is one of the most important


movements in American history. It was a movement against racism and
injustice, and has had a lasting impact on later anti-racist movements.

Is it still prevalent in the US?


oThe last racist law was taken down in 1967 by the Supreme Court ( Loving v.
Virginia)
oRacist groups, KKK, are in a decline
o 1920- 5 million members
o 2010- 5000 members

o Hate groups are on the rise

Downward Trend
o It has been almost 49 years since anti-miscegenation
laws have been struck down
o In 2013 12% of newlyweds married someone of a
different race
o 6.3% of all marriages were between spouses of
different races in 2013
o Up from less than 1% in 1970

Racism In The Classroom


oWhat can you do to eliminate racism?
o take a critical look at the materials which the students use to learn.
o Cooperative learning groups are not only an effective tool to stimulate academic
growth through participation
o Group work leads to better understanding of the task at hand, the dynamics of team-work, which will be
valuable in later stages of life, and opens the lines of communication between group members despite
race, sex, age or religion.

o One popular practice was to expose children to racism and how the sting of
discrimination felt by using the blue eye/green eye experiment

oHow to deal with racism in the classroom?


o Consider talking to the student. It's possible that this person is unaware that their
behavior is offensive.
o Some schools practice a zero-tolerance policy to discourage the practice of racism
and other undesirable behaviours
