C7 (p.191)
Event (p.191)
An event is the set of outcomes that fulfils a given
condition.
Example 4 (p.191)
20 cards with numbers 1 to 20 are placed in a box. A card
is picked from the box. List the elements from the sample
space that are
(a)Even numbers,
(b)Multiples of 4,
(c) 2-digit numbers in which the sum of digits is greater
than 5.
Example 4 (p.191)
20 cards with numbers 1 to 20 are placed in a box. A card
is picked from the box. List the elements from the sample
space that are
(a)Even numbers
Solution:
Sample space, S = {1, 2, 3, , 19, 20}
Elements from the sample space that are even numbers
are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20.
Example 4 (p.191)
20 cards with numbers 1 to 20 are placed in a box. A card
is picked from the box. List the elements from the sample
space that are
(b) Multiples of 4
Solution:
Elements from the sample space that are multiples of 4
are 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20.
Example 4 (p.191)
20 cards with numbers 1 to 20 are placed in a box. A card
is picked from the box. List the elements from the sample
space that are
(c) 2-digit numbers in which the sum of digits is greater
than 5.
Solution:
Elements from the sample space that are 2-digit numbers
with the sum of digits greater than 5 are 15, 16, 17, 18
and 19.

Example 6 (p.192)
A dice is rolled and a coin is tossed simultaneously.
Determine whether the following events are possible.
(a)K = getting a head and an even number.
(b)M = getting two heads.
(c) P = getting a tail and a prime number.
(d)Q = getting a number less than 7.
Example 6 (p.192)
A dice is rolled and a coin is tossed simultaneously.
Determine whether the following events are possible.
(a)K = getting a head and an even number.
Solution:
Lets H = Heads and T = Tails
S = {(H, 1), (H, 2), (H, 3), (H, 4), (H, 5), (H, 6), (T, 1), (T, 2), (T, 3), (T, 4),
(T, 5), (T, 6)}
K is possible.
K = {(H, 2), (H, 4), (H, 6)}
Example 6 (p.192)
A dice is rolled and a coin is tossed simultaneously.
Determine whether the following events are possible.
(b) M = getting two heads.
Solution:
Lets H = Heads and T = Tails
S = {(H, 1), (H, 2), (H, 3), (H, 4), (H, 5), (H, 6), (T, 1), (T, 2), (T, 3), (T,
4),
(T, 5), (T, 6)}
M is not possible because there are no two heads in the sample
space.
Example 6 (p.192)
A dice is rolled and a coin is tossed simultaneously.
Determine whether the following events are possible.
(c) P = getting a tail and a prime number.
Solution:
Lets H = Heads and T = Tails
S = {(H, 1), (H, 2), (H, 3), (H, 4), (H, 5), (H, 6), (T, 1), (T, 2), (T, 3), (T, 4),
(T, 5), (T, 6)}
P is possible.
P = {(T, 2), (T, 3), (T, 5)}
Example 6 (p.192)
A dice is rolled and a coin is tossed simultaneously.
Determine whether the following events are possible.
(d) Q = getting a number less than 4.
Solution:
Lets H = Heads and T = Tails
S = {(H, 1), (H, 2), (H, 3), (H, 4), (H, 5), (H, 6), (T, 1), (T, 2), (T, 3), (T, 4),
(T, 5), (T, 6)}
Q is possible.
Q = {(H, 1), (H, 2), (H, 3), (T, 1), (T, 2), (T, 3)}
