Analysis of the Story

Title: A Day in the Country
Author: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
Country: Russia
Setting: On the Valley
Characters: Fyokla
Danika
Terenity

It is just a single day, when a heavy, but

short rainstorm hits this tiny village. Young
Danika has gotten his arm caught in a tree.
Even younger little Fyokla has raced to the
village to find the kind Terenty, a cobbler.
Despite the rain he hurries with Fyokla to free
Danika. Then they walk and talk after the rain,
and the children learn much from him about
nature. Later that night the kind Terenty comes
quietly into the barn where the orphans are
sleeping and leaves them some bread for the

A darkleaden-coloured mass is creeping over the sky

towards the sun. Red zigzags of lightning gleam here and there
across it. There is a sound of far-away rumbling. A warm wind
frolics over the grass, bends the trees, and stirs up the dust. In a
minute there will be a spurt of May rain and a real storm will
begin.
Danilka looks at Terenty and greedily drinks in every word. In
spring, before one is weary of the warmth and the monotonous
green of the fields, when everything is fresh and full of
fragrance, who would not want to hear about the goldenmaybeetles, about thecranes, about the gurgling streams, and the

beautiful mountain is the beautiful mountain ranges that

stretch all across the southern borders. As written in the
excerpt that the place has a grassy land and abundant
trees, warmth and monotonous green fields, everything
is fresh and full of fragrance. During Spring you can hear
the goldenmay-beetles, thecranes, the gurgling
streams, and the corn mounting into ear?
The cities in Russia remain somewhat cold
throughout the year, although there are identifiable
seasons. The rainy seasons do not last long and often
give way to harsh winters. As stated in the story that
there will be a spurt of May rain and a real storm will
begin.

2. Countrys Religion

b. "Don't touch it, you might disturb them," says Terenty, wringing the
water out of his cap. "The nightingale is a singing-bird, without sin. He
has had a voice given him in his throat, to praise God and gladden the
heart of man. It's a sin to disturb him."What about the sparrow?"
"The sparrow doesn't matter, he's a bad, spiteful bird. He is like a
pickpocket in his ways. He doesn't like man to be happy. When Christ
was crucified it was the sparrow brought nails to the Jews, and called
'alive! alive!' "

largest religion with about 80% of the

population belonging to the Orthodox
Christian denomination. In the story, the
characters are talking about the
nightingale, a singing bird without a sin.
The bird is given a nice voice to praise God
and gladden the heart of a man. Also, they
are talking about the sparrow that is a bad
and spiteful bird and doesnt want man to
be happy. So if we will analyze it, the story
describes the belief of people in Russia
about God and His son Jesus Christ, which

b. Terenty answers all his questions, and there is no secret in Nature which
baffles him. He knows everything. Thus, for example, he knows the names of
all the wild flowers, animals, and stones. He knows what herbs cure diseases,
he has no difficulty in telling the age of a horse or a cow. Looking at the
sunset, at the moon, or the birds, he can tell what sort of weather it will be
next day. And indeed, it is not only Terenty who is so wise. Silanty Silitch, the
innkeeper, the market-gardener, the shepherd, and all the villagers, generally
speaking, know as much as he does. These people have learned not from
books, but in the fields, in the wood, on the river bank. Their teachers have
been the birds themselves, when they sang to them, the sun when it left a
glow ofcrimsonbehind it at setting, the very trees, and wild herbs.

c. The early life of people in Russia depends on

agriculture especially in rural places. Day after day, serf
works at the land of their lords, barely leaving time to
cultivate the land allotted to them, to supply the needs
of their family. People in the country live most of their
lives by hunting and farming.

In the Story Terenety knows about everything

because it was his daily routine going in the farm. Even

Silanty Silitch, the sacristan is a market gardener and a
shepherd. And all the villagers generally speaking has a
knowledge in farming and hunting. These people have
learned not from books but in the fields, in the woods
and on the river bank.

Analysis of the Story

Title: In Exile
Author: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
Country: Siberia
Setting: Prison in Siberia
Characters: Semyon
Vasily Sergeyitch
A young Tatar

Plot:
Several men have been sent to Siberia for
some crime or other. One is a total cynic and
welcomes his imprisonment, seeing himself as
actually free, since no one can tell him what to do
and he has virtually no responsibilities. He lives,
in this very limited sense, freely.
The others around him dream of going back
to wherever they came from, dreaming also of
lovers and families and a future. But the cynic
constantly criticizes them as missing the point of
life, which is, on his view, to want nothing, need
nothing and thus to be free.

even gentlemen, well-educated people, are lost.
Fifteen years ago they sent a gentleman here

was simply an official--who knows?

c. Siberia was deemed a good place to exile for

political reasons, as it was far from any foreign
country. Acitizen would not wish to escape in
vast Siberian countryside as the peasants and
criminals did.
Any discussion of Siberia is incomplete without
an examination of its role in the history of Russia
as a penal colony. Russian Tsars exiled many
political opponents, as well as common criminals,
to prison camps and remote villages in the
Siberian vastness. Such exiles, many of whom
were highly educated, helped transform Siberia
