Where is the River Tees?

The river tees is an
important river in the
North East of England.

Source of the River Tees

The source is in the

Pennine Hills near cross
fell at a height of 893m
above sea level.
It flows for 128km in an
easterly direction
towards the North Sea,
where the mouth of river
can be found in
Middlesbrough.

Upper course landforms

on the River Tees

High Force waterfall and gorge is

located in Forest-in-Teesdale in
the upper course.

The river drops 20m to create a

waterfall.

The waterfall is formed due to

resistant rock called dolerite.

The underlying darker rock with

horizontal layers is the
carboniferous limestone.

As the river plunges over the

dolerite it undercuts the weaker
limestone forming an overhang.

Over thousands of years the

retreat of the waterfall has
created a steep sided gorge.
