CAPILARIASIS *

Etiology: Capillaria philippininsis

Symptoms
Borborygmus is followed by:
Abdominal pain
Intermittent and then persistent diarrhea each
day

Anorexia, nausea, vomiting


Malaise
Weight loss

Signs

Cachexia
General muscle weakness
Wasting
Hyporefxia
Severe peripheral edema due to:
Malabsorption of sugars and fats
Marked protein-losing enteropathy

Treatment
Replacement of fluid and electrolytes
High protein diet
Antelminthic therapy
mebendazole, 400 mg daily for 10-30 days
thiabendazole, 25 mg/kg daily for 1 month,
continued on alternate days for up 6 months

Prophylaxis: do not ingest raw fresh water

Prognosis
Progressive loss of weight leading to
cachexia and death if appropriate
treatment is not given
