Semicolon
Asemicoloncan be used between two closely related
independent clauses, provided they are not already joined
by a coordinating conjunction. Semicolons can also be used
in place of commas to separate items in a list, particularly
when the elements of that list contain commas.

When to use semicolon?


Between

closely relatedindependent clause not


conjoined with acoordinating conjunction, when the two
clauses are balanced, opposed or contradictory.
Ex. 1. My wife would like tea; I would prefer coffee.
2. I went to the basketball court; I was told it was
closed for cleaning.
When

a comma replaces a period (full stop) in a


quotation, or when a quotation otherwise links two
independent sentences.
Ex. 1. "I have no use for this," he said; "you are
welcome to it."
2. "Is this your book?" she asked; "I found it on the
floor."

Between

independent clauses linked with a


transitional phrase or aconjunctive adverb.
This is the least common use, and is mostly
confined to academic texts.
Ex. 1. Everyone knows he is guilty of
committing the crime; of course, it will never
be proven.
2. It can occur in both melodic and harmonic
lines; however, it is subject to certain
restraints.

Colon
Thecolonis apunctuation mark consisting of two equally
sized dots centered on the same vertical line. A colon is used
to explain or start an enumeration. A colon is also used
withratios, titles andsubtitlesof books, city and publisher
inbibliographies, business letter salutation, hours and
minutes, andformal letters.

Ellipsis (pl. Ellipses)is a series of dots that usually
indicates an intentional omission of a word, sentence, or
whole section from a text without altering its original
meaning.[1]Depending on their context and placement in
a sentence, ellipses can also indicate an unfinished
thought, a leading statement, a slight pause, or a
nervous or awkward silence.Aposiopesisis the use of an
ellipsis to trail off into silence. for example: "But I thought
he was. . ."When placed at the beginning or end of a
sentence, the ellipsis can also inspire a feeling of
melancholy or longing.
